Whilst there is probably no bad feelings between the natives of both countries... I would say.. ( having Irish family)... There is still a lot of resentment to the ruling classes....
The visit means nothing to the common folk of both countries....

I missed out on a photo opportunity yesterday, the Queen gave the Irish president a lift to Windsor castle and her official limo was flying the Irish tricolour.

"Maybe if Martin McGuinness showed some remorse for the crimes he committed as a member of the IRA it would be a step in the right direction." Why would he, in his eyes he was fighting a war against nation occupying his country.

Because at the moment his holier than thou attitude is detrimental to the peace process. True and lasting peace will only come when there is forgiveness from all sides, and there can only be forgiveness when all sides admit and show remorse for what they have done.
Incidentally, there are allegations that McGuinness was carrying an SMG on Bloody Sunday and he fired the first rounds that led to the Para Regt returning fire. The rest as they say is history, albeit one sided. |

there were atrocities carried out by both sides of this conflict.
dont fool yourselves into thinking the british forces were whiter than white.
i have heard stories that would make your arsehole pucker.
its a hatred that is being perpetuated by those that lived through the troubles.
i have seen kids that have known nothing of it, spouting bile and hatred, because of what their parents and grandparents have told them.
until everyone can let go and say 'that was then, this is now' then nobody will ever move forward.
personally speaking, we should give the counties back to the republic anyway. we have no claim to them
but thats just me. |

We can all make allegations but until they are proven they are irrelevant. One-sided information is all I ever read and heard when I was growing up in the 80's thanks to the right-wing controlled media. |

Agreed but it seems that it is only the British Forces that are getting investigated etc ie the inquiry into Bloody Sunday with Soldiers potentially facing legal action yet IRA members are getting away with murder, litrally. Inequality will only bred more hatred and stall the peace process. |

tbf, under the good friday agreement, any many agreements after that, many of those that were convicted of atrocities on the irish side of things have been freed.
if thats a step forward, then fine, i have no problem with it, but it should be two fold.
however, there are still problems.
an undercurrent of unrest, both in NI and in the republic.
when im over there i dont go to V's local anymore after some unsavoury problems in the past. |

Martin Mc Guinness is elected by people to do a job..the job being to represent the people of Derry....He has a democratic mandate...he was head of an organisation which in the past committed horrific acts... Today he is minister of education and deputy first minister.... He has taken many steps to move forward many difficult steps.. He is not unique.. Most Irish political parties have a militant past many ex toaisigh have militant pasts even a number of ex presidents have militant pasts. The queen isn't my most admired of people but I admire her for acknowledging him as a joint leader and admire him for the steps he took. I admire the queen for saying a member of the crown will come to Dublin for the 1916 centenary...if we criticise all these people efforts wether they be republicans or members of the crown I dread to think of the consequences. |

The original title of this thread was queen dinning with Irish republican... Let's not forget president Higgins party was founded by a socialist republican who was executed by crown forces. So Irish republican isn't a specific term for a single strand of political opinion nor is it a term exclusive to Sinn fein |

Victor Barker’s son James was among 29 people killed in atrocity
Surrey solicitor will stand outside main gate with placard
It will read:‘A terrorist in white tie and tails is still a terrorist'
Mr Barker said: ‘I was born in Windsor and I thought I’ve got to do something'

Ask yourself one question. If Germany had won the war and Britain was occupied by German troops. Would the good proud people of Britain stood by let it continue. This is not a endorsement of violence but in order to understand the political inspiration you need to relate the issue |

At a time when the government has said there will be no further investigations into finding the perpetrators of the Birmingham pub bombings where 21 people lost their lives.
Wonder how Maxine Hambleton's(one of the 21) Brother and Sister Julie and Brian feel? They were in London in January to see if they could talk to MPs reference the bombings, that attended a meeting Gerry Adams called at one of Camdens council buildings. They approached Diane Abbott and politely asked her could they thev a word. her reply was "What is it you people want? Money??" |

If Leeds for example was occupied by German troops. What would the people of Leeds do. The answer and the comparison isn't palatable. Hence the non appropriate reply |

Or to give the unionists the right to their chosen nationality and religion.Hindsight is a wonderful thing and maybe,we should have never entered Ireland, but we did.And by doing so we created british citizens that live there(predominatly in the north) We owed them the right to choose their own destiny state(not that i believe thats the reason they got it mind, that was by threatening to withstand home rule "by any means necessary")
I ma going to leave it there as i know you as a United Irishman will never change you views and me as a Unionist will never change mine,so....Happy swinging |
