Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
We sold off school playing fields and reduced the level of PE in schools.
We closed down the school kitchens and replaced them with vending machines and microwaves.
I wonder what's the consequence of all of that?

"Fat kids
Funny that.
although, there shouldn't be with decent parenting..."
I agree but we have also seen a rise in children spending more time away from parents from a younger age.

yup but the 1 or 2 hour exercise they got at the school could be family activities at the weekend. |

"Fat kids

although, there shouldn't be with decent parenting..." I agree but not every parent is prepared to put the effort in. Every Saturday morning I used to go and stand in the freezing cold while callum did his cross country.
But if you send your kids to places like beavers, cubs, cadets ect, they get plenty of physical activity and it doesn't cost a fortune or something as simple as a bike ride on a Sunday afternoon. But some parents can't be bothered and let them sit on their xboxes all day or in front of the television

My grandchildren do plenty of sport. In Secondary my grandson plays football, rugby and cricket for the school. Out of school he plays football. It's not up to schools alone to keep children fit and healthy. His school has kitchens serving wraps and jacket potato amongst other food. If all they had was rubbish he would take a packed lunch |

Same for us with our 6 year old son .
Unfortunately there are those who don't take responsibility and expect others to do it for them .

A lot of land on school property was sold for housing but wasn't being used anyway. Not at my old school anyway. You don't need Olympic sized arenas to play outdoor games, plus we have sports centres and leisure centres available. All primary children go swimming and some secondary schools include golf and ice skating in their sport curriculum. We used to walk to local tennis courts in the summer |

sports and after school activities can be expensive if you go weekly though. |

Swimming is part of the curriculum now in schools.
I always took my kids swimming even though I can't swim an inch
I have been pretty lucky with my kids both been athletic.
They have run and sponsored different charities between them. |

All my children liked sport and activities. It must be difficult if you have a child who likes to stay home and not enjoy being sociable. I was like that a little. I preferred to read alone but I would go swimming if my friends were going |

Over the rainbow, under the bridge |
So schools should now be responsible for keeping kids fit and healthy?
Will there be enough time left on the curriculum to actually teach them academic subjects with everything else they are expected to imbue?
Any chance parents could take some responsibility? |

"Fat kids " they brought in a system and law in Latvia where your kids are weighed and fat scored every the months and if your kid is over weight you get three months grace to start moving the kids weight down! if no improvement is noticed in the three months the kid is taken into junior boot camp for intensive cardio diet and disciplinary training ! the parents are fined as a means of cost cover

"Lazy kids too much modern technology too!" I believe every word you say, but Also what i find with modern technology is why its where it is today is because it is what it is in most circumstances a world beater in what it does internet etc and thou it does what it does I,m still glad to say when i was at school the pace of life outdoors was generally slower topper, and beezer comic,s action man dolls and games like ker plunk, monopoly, enjoyed being in the garden if you had one, or safer to play outdoors thou it was not 100% safe I,m sure but not recognised enough has a danger to keep you in doors but yes going back to the school i enjoyed my school meals no vending machines then for food or drink I used to love my bottle of milk at break time when in the juniors "does" anyone know when all that stopped!!! Thou even with the internet surely there will be some that can live away from the playstation, internet enough while young to Appreciate other things long enough even if its a bird singing in the garden or a frog we had all these things to marvel at has i was outside more and obviously the list went on, kids today still like these things if encouraged and with adults lets hope there are enough of them to encourage there kids with the same Interests they enjoyed away from the xbox etc |

Besides less playing fields there's also the health & safety culture getting in the way of children running about at school - but that doesn't serve as an excuse for fat kids.
We have more fat kids because we have more fat adults. Being fat is becoming normal. It shouldn't. |

It is not just playing fields sold off. Our delightful government have given away the school buildings and land to the people running the free schools, that local authorities bought with our tax money over the years. Another con that we were not told about. Eventually there will be nothing left that has not been sold at below value or given away. And kids get the raw deal, with worse food and less exercise. |

that's ridiculous ~ what does a 5 year old need an iPad for & what do you get them the subsequent years, you'll never be able to keep up with the demand.
I'm all for technology but kids need to be kids ~ play outside, get dirty, scrape their knees like I did when I was little, lots of fun! |

Most streets are silent, mine is and has been for years. Yet when i moved in ..every night till dark you could see and hear the kids playing and getting into mischief. Not now...they all sit inside.
Even as a kid at christmas, we would all go outside and show everyone what we had for xmas..regardless of the weather. Not now....the streets are silent |

That is partly because children are demonised as criminals waiting to pounce if there are more than two of them playing together. We are lucky that the kids do play outside in good weather in our street but I wonder if it will still be tolerated as they get older and less cute.
