South West Water
had my yearly bill - no problems
phone up to arrange a payment plan - no problems
just generally make a comment saying 'shame my flat cant be metered' and the lady on the phone says 'it can be'
I had people out twice to check the property and was told it wasnt possible to meter it externally back in 2010. Yet the notes on my property are clear as day saying how they plan to meter it INTERNALLY and it gave details of fixtures/fittings etc...
SO WHY WASNT IT BLOODY DONE?! arghhhhhh
Could have saved a mini fortune by now if i had been on a meter..
Miffed... but hopefully it will be corrected and i get metered in the next 2 weeks ... fingers crossed!
Have a great day. |

"they are money grabbing bastards im not on a meter but theres 5of us living there and they want me to change over they can go and do one "
See - this is where an argument of double standards come in!
People will complain if a meter would have saved them money - but not if it means their bills increase due to a meter showing accurately how much they really use!
(Note - I have no meter and my bill on a tiny 1 bed flat is £34/mth. Fox's house is metered and half that!)

My rant.
I accidentally smashed my 'phone the other day and have to find £150 to get it repaired.
I've always had my 'phone insured until this one and I've never lost or broken it.
This year my provider wanted to put the price up from £6/m to £10/m for extra services I don't need, so I said no because it was covered on my home insurance with an excess less than a year's insurance would cost.
Now the insurer have informed me that claiming will increase my premium by 10% every year, making it not worth it as it'll end up costing more than the £150 to repair it.
Grrrrr.
Ok, it was my fault but still grrrrr. |

"my point on this is it should be your choice no theres "
Playing devils advocate - why?
You get no choice on an electricity or gas meter.
You don't get to estimate how much fuel you've taken from a pump.
You don't 'guestimate' the weight of loose sold fruit and veg in a supermarket.
Why should your water supply/drainage be an exception, meaning you don't pay for what you use?

"You get no choice on an electricity or gas meter."
You do get a choice of company and tariff though. Water is a monopoly that is free to rip everyone off.
I can see both sides of the argument, personally.
I don't see the water companies being penalised for how much water *they* waste with bad management and leaks, they just bump up the prices again, and restrict usage to cover it.
If we are expected to pay for what we use, enough to supply what we want to use, whenever we want to use it should be available. |

I don't know about other water companies but with Thames Water you han have a meter fitted and trial it for a year. If you don't like it they will shut it down, and you can go back onto normal billing. If you move and new people move in they will have to have the meter reconnected they wont have a choice. |

I pay just under £600 for four of us. I don't think a meter would be cheaper though! |

All new builds are have water meters automatically & I can imagine eventually we will all be given no choice & have meters installed.
If you struggle to pay water bills , there is help available esp for families that need to use lots of water for medical conditions. Whether you are metered or not . |

"If I recall you can have a water meter installed and if after a year it isn't cheaper you can have it removed." they will switch it off after a year . If you move then they make the next tenants use the meter. I applied to have one installed and that is their policy.
