So my Car Insurance is up tomorrow, so I'm browsing the comparison sites for Insurance during my lunchbreak..

My Premium has risen up this year.

I just rang one and they said "Nope. We don't compete and we don't beat prices..this our price!"

Does anyone have a strategy/process/system they use when bartering with companies for cheap Insurance?...

Any one of the comparison sites, usually give fair results. I tend to change insurers every year, as they never seem quite so competitive when you go into a second year.

When I do my car insurance I always put my gran or my mum as a nameddriver they have both been driving longer than me and usually brings the cost down!

As long as they haven't had any claims and convictions in the last 5 years.

It brought myn down by £140 last time

Are you trying to barter with your insurance company you have now or the ones that you have searched for a quote with?

That will only bring the cost down if you say that they are the main user and not you.

Comparison sites then ring your current provider and tell them you have a more competitive quotation

You might even get a baby meerkat.

Even with an extra years no claims your renewal with your existing company will be higher!

Try their own website and pretend to be a new customer - bet the quote is cheaper! Then call and tell them you want the same deal (new customers always get a better rate!) or you'll walk!!

That said - the 'meetkat' site usually sources a cheaper deal - and then opt for the 'baby Oleg' free toy as you can flog it on eBay for £35 at the mo! Look at it as an extra discount!

I was looking at insurance this morning.

Tesco on Compare the Market was £1070, Tesco direst through their own website, with Clubcard discount £2140! Go figure.

You would of thought companies would be fighting for your business, so I'd be looking round for other quotes before you re-sign with the same insurer

"Are you trying to barter with your insurance company you have now or the ones that you have searched for a quote with?"

I got a quote from my own who i've been with for 3 years and it's up nearly £150 quid.

So I'm searching.

But this thread is interesting, especially the comment above about having a named driver.

I've also got 5 years no claims.

Cheers all

Ok ta.

I never barter with the insurance company I am with, although they normally offer to barter when you phone to say you need the no claims bonus.

I figure if they can barter then they should have given me that price originally, so I go elsewhere if cheaper.

Mine is due tomorrow and I have just swopped for 83.00 cheaper

If your insure as a single male. Add your missus even as on occasional driver. You then get a discount as they seem to think those in a relationship are more responsible

Good luck.

Only pay 145 a year inc business use

Just remember to have them as a named driver, not the main driver or you lose your no claims.

Why am I saying that? Not everyone is as dense as me!!

where do you declare you car is parked?

most people put in a locked garage thinking it will drop the premium but it increases it. driveway or street parking.

dropped mine by £200

More than 1 driver will bring your premium down as will what occupation you do and where your car is kept, locked garage normally comes in cheaper than driveway and road, also how many miles you do in a year affects your premium as well

Depends where you live that is though. If the crime statistics for garage and shed burglary is higher in a particular area, then insurance would be cheaper if you say you parked on a street. But my insurance is cheaper when I say I park in a garage.

Also, the named driver thing definitely works. Mine was almost £200 cheaper when I put Andy on mine, and I was still down as the main driver.

Just did mine with Elephant. Paying 900 quid for insurance. Mind you, got my old man with donkey years of no claims as main driver and then added my sisters on as well. Helps that i've been driving 7 years with a clean record too. Price went down big time!!

...they bloody love female drivers! So, try and do that.

No I have always gone with someone else who offered me a cheaper price. This time is different as my car is a Jap import so not many will insure her however my cost per month did not go up more than a couple of quid so not bothered about trying to find a new one. I don't barter with companies, I go elsewhere

i have worked for car insurance company to get the best prices buy 30 days before your renewal as the closer you buy they say the more unorganised you are. i wont say anything else as it could be used to obtain cheap prices wrongly. but if you are found to be telling porkies ie adcing drivers that dont drive the car or live at the same house your insurance is not valid (6 points and car sezied by police) or (they wont pay out in a RTC) what im saying is be carefull.

Someone I know who is under 25 put their father as the named driver but the finance for the car was in his name, when he came to insure it the next year he got told that his insurance would have been invalid, not sure if its true or not.

yeah thats naughty. i own my car and have both parents on the policy simply because it halves the cost

Remember the address on your driving licence should be the one submitted for insurance, off road parking will always reduce the policy and crucially the one thing you can legally manipulate to an extent is your job title. Some titles have loadings and a different description can alter your premium as long as its correct google in combination Marting lewis and Car Insurance he went into depth on this 18 months ago and how it could alter things.

I couldn't be bothered to read the thread because I'm lazy but have you looked into joining an owners club?

Many of them online have free membership and also do deals with insurance companies for discounts.

When I've looked I've always used the two main comparision sites and my insurance seems to be pretty reasonable, the cheapest coming for some obscure brokers.

Oh just to add...

I also found out the quote you get depends on the day you call.

i.e: if you call on a day with lots of claims (ANY day) your quote will go up.

Apparently it's based on an algorithm that all companies use and they just spin their individual prices off that.

So..hmmm..interesting.

We bought our first car 2 weeks ago and got some rather interesting quotes. The initial one was for over £1200. We brought it down by half on the meerkat site and then added his step dad as a named driver and brought the cost down by £100. Interestingly, we tried putting stepdad's correct title of doctor (which he never uses outside of work) which brought the cost down by another £100.

It was so worth the extra time and research to bring our cost down by so much

Central

I check out current insurer, to see if they do promise to beat quotes, then end the call.

Go to the comparison sites as they each cover differing insurers, and compare.

Go to cashback sites, and see if the better quoting companies have any cashback offers for new customer policies. Also, check my own insurer, to see if they're listed as giving cashback.

Phone existing insurer to haggle, if they seem open to it. If no luck, I may phone again, speaking to another assistant, as sometimes some are more receptive to this than others.

If current insurer not budging, then I buy the best insurance for me, which means probably the lowest cost - assuming they've got satisfactory cover and benefits.

Some unions offer good links and discounts too, so it's worth checking out professional options, if it's a possibility.

Overall, I make sure I'm not frazzled by the experience, and space it out a bit. Nor do I retain loyalty, when a company has no loyalty whatsoever to me.
