not stupid question at all - I never knew what it was until I was confronted with non-vanilla.
To me vanilla means conventional sex-life and therefore these people tend not to be on these sites. Sometimes we refer to vanilla friends (also known as vertical friends) to differentiate between our swinging and non-swinging friends.

Just as in opposed to horizontal - but then not all non-vanilla is horizontal and not all vertical is vanilla |
