Anyone any good with cars?
I've got a Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 130 bhp. It's Mark 3, 53 plate (although manufactured in 2004) and done 161,000 miles. It's recently had lots of work done (water pump, injectors replaced, auxiliary belt changed etc) and it suddenly threw up an EML and the glow plug light is flashing, it's running in limp mode. Ran diagnostic and got a fault code suggesting fuel pump/injector/cam malfunction. The mechanic said it was probably a blocked injector and I should just call it quits and sell it for breaking. I'm not convinced, I think it could be the camshaft sensor, is there an easy way to tell besides just replacing it and hoping for the best? |

"I would change the sensor.... to start before I go near fuel pump. ..... "
I don't think it's the pump in honesty, I guess I've got nothing to lose really as the sensor is a thirty quid part. I don't really want to sell it or break it, I love my car. |

A quick check leads me to belive the CPS is electromagnetic, therefore, it should have a resistance you can measure with a multimeter across the connector pins/sockets, not sure what the resistance should be (on my merc it was about 700 ohms), but if it's open circuit (ie infinity ohms), then it's almost certainly faulty.
Have you tried new glowplugs too? |

Glowplugs were replaced just before Christmas. I love Monty the Mondy, but I don't think he loves me... lol |

"Is it running OK? if not whats it doing? "
It's running in limp mode so currently no turbo, but the eml will do that.
First start of the day I get a lovely puff of blue smoke but then it's fine. Other than having no guts it's running fine, just a bit costly. |

Yes, everyone is a bit stumped but it seems a common fault. |

"If its starting OK its not going to be glowplugs
I know that, they're new
Yeah, sorry, dumb suggestion - have you tried testing the CPS to see if it's open circuit?"
Nope not tried that yet, will make that my next port of call. |

My experience shows non specific fault code, and no turbo was map sensor
Would help if you said what the code was |

"P0251"
Change fuel and air filter first ,
if still the same take it to a proper diesel engineer , that can fault find it correctly .
You will look at forums and get advice and spend loads of money before you get anywhere .
When I say diesel engineers I mean a proper diesel engineer. Rather than a mechanic

Wouldn't have a diesel mondeo, they're good when they're good but very expensive when they've got a problem the injectors are usually a really big problem. Cut your losses it could get very pricey |

If the cam sensor is a grey colour connector replace it these were a commom problem if not at that milage id remove derv filter n check for metal particles in fuel sure sign pumps breakin down internally u can rule out injectors with a leak off check |

Injectors were replaced, and the flywheel and gearbox was changed too as they are usually an issue. So theoretically it should just be the age/mileage type stuff. I had a petrol but it was costing me a fortune, I do 16 miles a day in school run alone x |

That would not take a lot, I left Ford dealerships in 2000 because the cars were so bad, I would never have another one |

I gave good news and bad.
Mine has just had the same problem. It is a Mk3 ST with the 2.2 engine.
I reckon it's your EGR valve. The bad news is its bloody expensive. To swap it it's four nuts and a screw driver . Honestly it's dead simple
The good news, and you won't believe me When you know which type of EGR valve you have. Go and get one from Jaguar, your Ford is the same as an X type and the part is about £100, cheaper.
Its what I did about 4 weeks ago.
Ps, you can get a fault code reader from eBay for£22, then you just Google the fault codes.
If this has been any help,PM me and i will talk you thru it. |

had one of these and it was a constant nightmare for dropping into limp mode turns out it was the injectors losing there code to the ecu £80 a time to have them re coded at local diesel fitters ford wanted £700 to change the lot ! luckily found a guy on a forum who could do the coding for £10 a pop on his lap top and do a proper diagnostic at the same time maybe worth trying rather than throwing money at gueses good luck .ended up bining mine for a huge loss after spending £1k + on it wouldnt have another if you gave it to me Fix Or Repair Dailey was spot on
