When someone is off work because they are ill, do they have to tell their boss what the illness is or can they simply tell HR ?
My boss is dreadful for telling other staff and sometimes clients about the staffs illness and thats really not on is it ? Surely it should be kept private ?
I have spoken to her in the past about telling other staff about my health appointments, she denied it then blamed other staff but then she was heard yet again talking about me to another staff member ! |

You can request to discuss this with HR or another manager. I would personally choose HR and at the same time mention my concerns that confidential health information is being shared, and ask for it to be documented. It can only be shared with your permission and your manager needs to tell you who they want to share it with when they ask of they can share it.
Clearly as it's being used as workplace gossip this isn't the case.

I have thought about going to HR about her behaviour but i will still be working with her as my manager and i really dont want to make life difficult which it certanly would be if i made a formal complaint about her !
To be honest i dont mind my fellow workers knowing whats wrong with me but there are times when i would prefer to keep it private, which is how it should be anyway.

Your manager is totally out of order and I would be looking at the grievance procedure personally. But the way I read your post I interpreted it as being off sick is a common thing for you and if it is (and I may have misinterpreted it) then your manager could take you down the capability route. If this effects all of your colleagues raising it collectively could be a safer option. |

I am not off sick often, however i have worked there for a long time and in that time i have had an operation which required some months off work to recover and then a slow return to work at first.
She does it to everyone not just me but i dont think many would do anything about it because we all work closely with her and she can be difficult ! |

When i returned to work following my operation i had meetings with her and HR to make sure all was going well for me etc .... a legal requirement.
One one occasion she "chatted" to HR about one of our clients and told HR very personal information and even named toe client ..... i thought that was very wrong for several reasons, one being that it was my appointment and two being that our clients details should also be private.
HR did look uncomfortable about it and changed the conversation back to me and how i was coping at work follwoing the operation, but as far as i know nothing was said to reprimand her. |

Just raise your concerns as a first step. They may need to investigate further as it's hard to prove where gossip generated if you're not hearing it back first hand, unless the only person at work you've ever discussed your sickness with is this one person. It becomes he said/she said and that's unlikely to form a solid case.
The manager should be given the opportunity to address their behaviour too, mediation is often very fruitful (rather than making a formal complaint which you don't seem to want anyway) it depends on the size of your organisation as to what's available. |

Your manager and employer have a duty of care for you, both mental, emotional and physical.
Many managers and employers do not recognise this, if you want more info message me (used to be an acas affiliated union rep).
Been in your position and can totally empathise. Stay strong and know your rights is my advice.
