"I think that if men are charming then women are seductive. Just a _iew
"
I tend to agree with that to a degree but in real life day to day situations a man can be charming as a matter of course,a woman can't always behave seductively without people thinking it a little odd
So do you think the equivalent for a woman would be flirty? |

Right I've given it some thought now. I think both women and men can be charming. It is a 'magical' quality that attracts others. I think it comes with an ability to focus on the other person while being quietly confident about yourself. A charming person exudes a positive energy that acts like a magnet for others.

I think being enigmatic or intriguing is a different quality that entices by leaving you with unanswered questions and a wish to explore more. This comes from knowing how mych to disclose to whet the appetite while ensuring the promise of satisfying that appetite is just out of reach.
Again both men and women can have this quality too
Thoughts? |

My interpretation of the above statement.
It's ONLY men who are DESCRIBED as charming.
But charming in and of itself applies to both sexes.
My real thoughts are charming is passing the salt when they can't reach it... |

I guess another engaging quality is beIng witty. Not cracking jokes all the time but the ability to find humour in everyday things and conversations.
A charming, enigmatic and witty woman would attract me every time |

Its positive if its used with humour and a quick whit its negative if its used in a tacky way and comes across in a sleazy way. I guess it has more to do with who is using it. |

That's a type of charm. I married a very charming man, yes it's charismatic I agree, but very mannerly too I think, quite chivalrous in a man. And I think a sunny disposition is part of it - charming people are always smiling while they are being charming. |

I'd agree with all of that...charismatic is often used to describe a similar quality. Being positive, chivalrous and mannerly would all be part of it in my mind too, when applied to a man
I'm not sure what the female equivalent of chivalrous |

There's a dangerous line to tread between charm and smarm...some people tread it beautifully.
Real charm seems inate.
Trying too hard can be smarmy.
In this environment some people are naturally (at times) trying their best to be charming.
Some don't have it but that's not necessarily a negative as there are many qualities that combine to make someone interesting.

No. I think charming can be used to describe both men and women. Someone who is truely charming just is, they don't need to try or use it. It comes naturally and that shows.

I suppose some of it is very specific to the individual and what they perceive as charming. I find a self-effacing guy charming and a chap with humility.
Someone trying to charm me would have the opposite effect. |

Flirting and charm are different for me. I think flirting is more overt, charm comes from within.
A person can be both charming and flirtatious, one or the other, or neither |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
"Apparently, ridicule is nothing to be scared of......"
Even if you are Princess Charming?
Charm is a quality both genders can possess but I think the way we use language means that charming is used for a man and gracious and/or alluring is used for women.
I described some children as charming at the weekend and got called old-fashioned for using the word.

Well if being charming and gracious are deemed old-fashioned, it's about time they were made 21st century qualities |

it's been very interesting reading this thread. American women, particularly southern ladies, are often seen to possess the quality of charm. it is not seen as inherently constrained to that gender, i hasten to add, but is seen as a quality present in ladies. it is used to describe someone who is gracious, well mannered, tactful, and seems to create a relaxed atmosphere and sense of ease in others. it is something which some are born with and others learn, but all who choose to are capable. |

Yes, exactly so. 'Going on a charm offensive', or 'deciding to charm someone' is not the same thing at all - charming isn't something you DO, it's far more something you ARE. (or not!) |
