People seem to forget we as a country are still spending more than we are generating in tax revenue. Years more austerity to come although the economic growth will help over time. |

"Only 30 million of 65 million actually work in this country. I wonder how many of those aren't in the public sector and are therefore actually earning for the country "
When you say public sector, do you mean nurses, firefighters etc ? |

Hello Onny,
"When you say public sector, do you mean nurses, firefighters etc ?"
It is a financial fact that some jobs generate wealth and some jobs do not, quite the reverse.
We need a large proportion of wealth generating jobs to pay for the essential services and if we do not have that, everyone is worse off as we have higher taxes. Simple economics which in practice is not that simple but that's the basic theory.
Have you calculated that for Scotland in _iew of your inclination for independence?

And people in part time or zero hours jobs don't count on the register either. |

"ISA limit is going up to 15000.....
pensioner bonds to be introduced
"
A massive "please pensioners vote for us" set of policies, will prove pretty popular I suspect. |

"Bingo and pensioner bonds, pension pots with no caps and no need for an annuity. I wonder if they know their voters?
I can hear Wishy telling us he knew all of this was coming.
"
Bingo levy was always way too high....
Pensioner bond will be interesting depending on what rate they set them out.. because people will take money out of banks and put them there instead... unless banks now respond by increasing saving rates...
pension pots with no annuity is an interesting concept... especially the 55% levy going so it will be 20% instead for most

I wonder what the effect of loss of profit on selling annuities will have on the pension industry?

"Milliband giving it a real go in response, you have to love a tryer!"
It's too short on detail to be effective. The Deputy Speaker is doing his best to bring the House to order.
Ed Balls and Georgie Boy joking around during PMQs and continuing now during Ed Miliband won't help either.

It is short on detail because the electorate knows that Labour caused the mess and while many don't like it the Tories have done a reasonable job of sorting it out. He is going to have to find some real policies on which to base his election campaign because he won't win the economic debate.
As for Balls and Osborne, childish beyond belief. |

If he is offering so much jam to core Tory voters now what will he offer next March, immediately before the election?

"Is Georgie positioning himself as the next leader and PM?
he'll be lucky, Theresa and Boris are probably preferable for the tory hierarchy.."
BoJo has the problem of still having to run London. Does Ms May have enough support to be leader?

Well given they wouldn't be drawn by the direct question from Milliband, we know the answer, a top rate income tax cut!! |

a strange and slightly naïve _iew of what some of those in the public sector do 'contribute'.. |

That one is obvious but they will still have to win over enough of the apathetic to have a single party government. Although I think they'd like to keep Danny.

I don't think the contribution is in doubt, it was more a point I think, about the numbers of those employed who contribute towards economic growth, and that could keep us debating for hours! |

this may well be the biggest question mark .... the shares in insurance companies dropped today on this news...
the other question is going to be "who is giving out the free independent advice" that osbourne committed to,
is it going to be government setting up a new dept within the pension service... which may well be what the DWP would like to link it with flat rate pensions...
or outsource it to the voluntary sector someone like MAS (Money Advisory Service)
or even pay IFA's to do the work...
the devil is going to be in the detail....
speaking for myself in the job i do.. i'd quite like to do that! |
