So the conservatives finally found a way to destroy the BBC and get Rupert Murdoch back on side in time for the election. They're going to decriminalise non-payment of the license fee which basically takes away any fear it may have held for people. And thus more and more will say "fuck it, take me to small claims". It might take a few years but it's a big nail in the coffin.

And I know the anti-license fee lot will be on here shortly banging on about how they don't ever ever ever watch any BBC output (bet you do, it's everywhere) and how it's their choice to pay stupid amounts for Sky blah blah fucking blah.

But I like the BBC and will be very sad when there's nothing to watch but a bazillion channels of Ant n Decs Saturday night cunt fest and Big Brother does Dancing on the Stars in a Cube. And nothing to listen to but 2 songs-10 adverts-2 songs-10 adverts........

Ive started paying my licence this year for the first time in a few years.

Living in a block of flats Ive kind of known if I don't let them in they can't prosecute - or at least thats what I wrongly found.

I pay £5.60 a week and think that is good value - I don't pay all year round.

I don't have sky or cable just a shitty digi box where at the moment only a few channels work

That's excellent news. People shouldn't be forced to pay for something they don't want or don't need. The only BBC programmes we tend to watch are ones that they've sold to Sky. The breaks in between are a good opportunity to go to the loo, make a cuppa, discuss the programme etc.

Newcastle and Gateshead

this is going to need some clarification attached to it.....

they are going to turn "non payment of tv license" from a criminal offence to a civil offence... which means that if wont affect someone in job applications (for example if they had to do CRB checks), and it is something you won't be sent to prison for.....

No, not at all. If I'm that into the programme I record it on the sky box and fast forward through the advert breaks. It really isn't a hardship.

i dont understand the problem with adverts.

people need to relax.

the BBC have just announced they are closing my favourite BBC channel, to concentrate on BBC drama, of which i have no interest, so what exactly do i owe to the beeb?

nothing.

unfortunately, being a resonable human being, i pay my bills, and i pay my licence, without question.

however, if it goes up, i may well reconsider this course of action and to hell with the consequences.

I never cease to be amazed that people rail against the licence fee but are happy to pay up to the Dirty Digger. I know you don't 'have' to pay him, but the alternative is that you don't watch his output.

I'm guessing that de-criminalisation will be followed by the BBC becoming a subscription service.

We do watch some BBC programmes, because we are forced to pay for it, and some are mildly entertaining. We really wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there, and would enjoy spending the £145 much more on something else. Perhaps avid viewers should pay more, and let those who can do without it pay nothing towards it.

I agree, the BBC has become a little bit skewed of late, mainly because the government has been on its case since the dirty dossier scandal, but could always be relied on to give a fairly balanced output.

I take it you prefer your news with a corporate agenda.

TV is a multi-billion pound industry - you would have to be very naive to believe that anyone involved in its production isn't a crook in some shape or form. Anyway, why aren't you currently getting your VFM and watching The Great British Sewing Bee instead of posting in a forum?

Like Chris Patten? The guy who gave away Hong Kong?"

Are you having a laugh? He was simply the governor when it was handed over. The results of an agreement made long long before he had anything to do with it.

And to be any sort of deterrent, the fine will have to be more than the licence fee."

well the maximum fine at the moment for non-payment is £1000.. paying the license is £145

think it is better that it becomes a civil offense... in the last 2 years 107 people have been send to jail for non-payment

non-payment of council tax is a civil offence...

minor driving things such as parking tickets, speeding, and having no MOT/Insurance on their own are civil offences

so I don't see why Non-payment should be a criminal offence where jail time is warrented....

the BBC have just announced they are closing my favourite BBC channel, to concentrate on BBC drama, of which i have no interest, so what exactly do i owe to the beeb?

nothing.

however, if it goes up, i may well reconsider this course of action and to hell with the consequences."

Let's not let facts get in the way of a perfectly ill informed rant shall we? Most of the BBC 3 content will go on other channels and all of it is moving to Iplayer so you can access it all the time. Even better for you. You do not need to remember to record it etc. Additionally the licence fee pays for Iplayer so it is worth paying for that alone.

You are allowed to watch BBC programmes on iplayer after they have been first screened without paying for a tv licence but to use that as an argument is erroneous for a few reasons.

1. The licence fee is needed to pay for the programme in the first place.

2. Saying that you can get it free so why bother paying is basically the argument a child would employ and is selfish and short sighted.

3. The BBC provides public service broadcasting across the world providing unbiased information in countries that toil under opression and censorship. We as a nation have a duty to preserve that. Without these freedoms sites like this would not exist.

Channel 4 is also funded by the government and no one moans about that do they?

Good gracious...

Fair and balanced means showing both sides to an argument and giving them a chance to be heard. It does not mean only saying what you want to hear and what you think is right.

And they do not protect paedos. How moronic is that? Who do you think has given all the evidence to the police to catch the people who did commit crimes in the past?

You will see that many if not all the cases that only involve members of the public's word are falling flat. The cases which have stuck have been partly as a result of the BBC seeking and providing evidence. Also plenty people from other channels have been arrested too. However these channels have a financial incentive to keep it quiet and not help the police or sponsors and advertisers would go elsewhere. The licence fee allows the BBC to expose its own wrongdoing where other channels refuse.

Your argument suggests, by extrapolation, that organisations who are bribing government officials, bribing the police, hacking the phone of dead schoolgirls etc etc and still seeking to cover all that up are better than an organisation who admits wrongdoing and puts it right?

Have a think about your pathological shortsightedness and have the sense to realise when you are bloody lucky to have the bbc and stop looking a gift horse in the mouth.

"So the conservatives finally found a way to destroy the BBC and get Rupert Murdoch back on side in time for the election.

And nothing to listen to but 2 songs-10 adverts-2 songs-10 adverts........"

Quite some time ago I was one of the people saying that the licence fee should be scraped. Now, and with all the channels available, I think the BBC make some of the best programmes (apart from sitcoms which nobody seems to be able to get right at the moment). They also have some very good regional radio shows and they commentate extremely well on whatever sport they have left. They have a great cookery website and all the websites they have seem to be well thought out and displayed. I am also impressed, to a degree, with their news coverage although that does seem to lean in favour of whatever party is in at the time. Their current affairs programmes seem well run also.

The point is if your want to watch any television you have to pay for a licence. All the money goes to the BBC even if you never watch anything the BBC produce. How is that fair? It's about time it became a subscrition service.

How do the govt subsidise the BBC exactly?

Well if you don't want to pay your license fee then don't and you may or may not end up in court. But when the BBC folds or becomes subscription only (and/or ends up like PBS in America and has to have crap telethons to raise cash) you'll have the choice you so desperately claim to want.

And that choice will be: pay considerably more than £12 a month to watch lower quality telly, or don't watch telly at all.

"Aha but with the BBC gone, other TV networks will spring up and the price will come down! Got you there you uppity tranny!"

Well no, not really. You'll get more stations showing the same very low budget repeated dross because no one will be able to afford to make any original programming. So I'm back to bazillions of channels of Ant n fucking Dec.

Joy.

the government top up the licence fee(aprox£3.4b) and commercial income(aprox £1.2b) with an annual grant in recent years this has varied between £250m and £300m, there has also been specific additional funds provided for digital switchover and the now abandoned digital project at the bbc.

if that was true why are american TV shows much more high budget than the uk ones?

It's a bit OTT having non payment of TV licence as a criminal offence. If that argument was followed through all Utility Bills should be criminal for non payment.

I'm glad to pay my TV licence. It's great value, so why should I stop paying it once it becomes a Civil rather than a criminal offence. If you use a service you should pay for it. Simple.

Great news-take it further and break up the whole bbc monopoly.

Crap news programmes overloaded with luvvies and over the top pay for top execs.

BBC Scotland is a total shambles will be glad if it is totally wiped out.

the reason its currently a criminal offence is that the licence fee is classed as a tax, non payment is therefore treated in a similar way to tax evasion.

Not suggesting you should stop paying it if it's decriminalised (sounds like its a class A drug!), just that it was perhaps only the fear of the criminal record keeping a lot of people paying.

I imagine non-payment is unlikely to be persued with the vigor of speeding fines etc simply because of the huge quantity of people who might decide not to.

"So the conservatives finally found a way to destroy the BBC and get Rupert Murdoch back on side in time for the election.

I totally agree! I hate films and dramas interrupted by adverts! "

this wont harm the BBC much, even wonga wont lend if you have ccj's unpaid. and nobody gets sent to jail for unpaid license anyway.

what many seem to forget is without the BBC there wouldnt be Freeview or digital tv and no 3g or 4g phone bandwidth so mobile phones and smartphones would be dying fast in busy places like London.

so next time you browse fab on your phone, say thanks to the tv license which has served this country well for many years.

On the contrary, I do like some of the content of the BBC. I wouldn't, however, miss those programmes if they were no longer broadcast. My life really isn't that empty. I think there's something else behind your dislike of commercial television stations. Last night, the Mr and I watched a fascinating documentary on Nat Geo. During the first break, I made a cuppa while he checked our ebay sales. In the second break we went out onto the patio and threw dog biscuits down the garden for the foxes. During the third break, we discussed the first parts of the programme, and while we did so, an advert came on for the washing powder we needed on half price at one of our 3 local supermarkets. We shopped there earlier, and saved £5. I think you hate commercial stations with such passion because you don't want to spend the breaks not being bombarded by the thrilling plot of Eastenders in the company of somebody you really don't like.

The BBC doesn't help itself at times unfortunately by wasting vast amounts of money. Over £100 million wasted on the failed DMI project is an absolute disgrace. At least they are getting rid of BBC3, which is a shambles of a channel.

Good old auntie Beeb, such a caring and thoughtful organisation.

The BBC was responsible for more than one in ten criminal prosecutions last year as the number of people taken to court for non payment of their television licence reached a new high.

More than 180,000 people – almost 3,500 a week – appeared before the Magistrates Courts, accused of watching television without a valid £145.50 licence.

The BBC has come under fire after official figures showed that 107 people had been jailed in just over two years for failing to paying fines for not having a TV licence.

The Ministry of Justice revealed the number of people who had been jailed from January 2011 to March 2013 for defaulting on fines for not paying for a TV licence after a Freedom of Information request by the Huffington Post UK.

Just going to offer a perspective from across the pond. You could be a lot worse, and have to deal with the irish license system and rte.

A lot of the reasons I see here for nonpayment I share but for the Irish licence, and the government are trying to bring in a broadcast charge (cough tax cough) instead of a licence to cover all mediums not just TV. The worst part is, every household will have to pay even if they can't receive! So if you've no internet, no TV, no phone or radio you still gotta pay!

The brainwashing is already starting over here...ads on rte for the licence don't have a single TV in them ( laptops tablets and phones instead)

I too would like an opt-out for the Irish system

BUT

I would gladly pay towards the UK license fee as what you've got is a million times better than what we've got!

Watch the same programmes online a minute after broadcast and you don't need a TV licence, of course they are currently considering ways to beat this. The TV licence is so out of sync with the modern world, with on demand TV its hard to understand why we still watch what we are told to.

When you in another country you cannot watch BBC online, wonder if this will apply to Scotland if they vote yes?

I always cringed when the BBC ran those propaganda ads stating "thanks to the unique way it is funded...." meaning "thanks to the fact that we have the public over a barrel..."

I don't disagree with the basic principals that if you want to watch something then pay for it, if you don't want to watch it then you shouldn't have to pay.

Time for the BBC to get off it's high horse, catch up with the technology and go Pay on Demand me thinks.

These replies just amuse me.

So the argument is thus: you'd rather the choice to not pay £140 per year, but instead pay a MINIMUM of £255 a year for Sky (going on the package price quoted on their website for basic entertainment at £21.50pm, which includes all the free channels that the license fee help fund amongst others) instead?

So you're being forcibly beaten with a baseball bat. You'd like the choice of opting out of that as you don't like it and instead be beaten by a bigger baseball bat of your choosing?

So the argument is thus: you'd rather the choice to not pay £140 per year, but instead pay a MINIMUM of £255 a year for Sky (going on the package price quoted on their website for basic entertainment at £21.50pm, which includes all the free channels that the license fee help fund amongst others) instead?

So you're being forcibly beaten with a baseball bat. You'd like the choice of opting out of that as you don't like it and instead be beaten by a bigger baseball bat of your choosing?

Humans are dumb. No wonder the aliens fuck off just as soon as they land. "

"I mainly watch sport on TV and the BBC shows very little that I am interested in.Would sooner have the choice to pay or not through sky and Bt sport, rather than be forced to pay the BBC."

I'm not a fan of some of what the BBC puts out but, as I've said before, Radio 4 alone is worth the licence fee.

In fact, the Shipping Forecast on its own is worth the licence fee.

It should be pay on demand for those of us who don't want it instead of being forced to pay. Not only 3 or 4 channels to watch on tv now and so many are free. Still pay for other channels if you want them and if you don't you don't pay simples. This recession has made us make so many cut backs over the last 4/5 years which I would rather have kept and canceled my tv licence fee instead but scared of breaking the stupid law of being forced to pay for what we don't even watch

You really can't put your point of view across without being insulting can you? That just shows the mentality of a BBC addict. I also think it's quite crass of you to believe that everybody can afford £145 a year for something they can do without. Just because you think the Patagonian Nose Flute Hour on BBC Radio Blah is worth the money alone, to other people, especially financially struggling families, £145 can buy quite a few meals. As I've said before, there should be a choice. Why don't you just pay for your own, and a few other peoples' licences if you're so well off?

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

The BBC is a world leader in terms of broadcasting. It's programmes are bought by many other channels. It will be a sad loss if all we are left with are commercial channels. We will end up with the dross which is the major diet of a US audience where advertising takes up more time than the actual programmes.

Humans are not dumb. They just like to have the right to choose now and again. Your going to have the right to choose in a few months. I'm thinking I might apply your logic should the Scots choose to leave the UK and go it alone

Dross rather succinctly describes the US tv audience.

two points to make, firstly the poster didnt say they are well off, they made a comparison between the cost of the tv licence and the cost of a sky subscription.

secondly, anyone who is in the financial position you illustrate is free to make the choice of whether to have not only a tv licence but whether to have a tv at all.

If they cant do without something then you need to expect to meet the associated costs.

personally i think the bbc has become dysfunctional and requires a root and branch review, but it needs to be funded somehow.

To be honest, I'm fed up with this subject - I just don't see why people are so willing to pay out money for an unnecessary entertainment channel when there is so much more in life to be entertained by, and many other good programmes commercial channels.

If the BBC goes, I will rejoice in the fact that I will have an extra £145 per year to do something else more constructive and enjoyable with, but I won't mourn the loss of such a trivial thing from my life.

dont be fooled by thinking that parliament (esp the treasury) woild allow such a lucrative cash cow disappear, they would simply move the goalposts.

"So the conservatives finally found a way to destroy the BBC and get Rupert Murdoch back on side in time for the election.

And nothing to listen to but 2 songs-10 adverts-2 songs-10 adverts........"

So not only do I already choose to pay a subscription service to Virgin an I don't see why I should pay for the privilege of having a DEVICE in my home that allows me to watch live broadcasts.

The license is an outdated mode of collecting revenue and overpaying the people at the top.

The TV service doesn't even have HD for local stations!

Yes the do produce some excellent progs and I HATE adverts with a passion!

But they really do need to look for another method of funding and not criminalizing those who struggle to pay.

To be frank I'd be happy to loose a cpl of BBC stations (3 is going)and it's not as if is financially broke thanks to the likes of Top Gear which is the most sold TV Prog in.....the World! it's viewed in over 212 territories around the world from Ghana to Guatemala, Moldova to Myanmar.

And how easily insulted non-bbc viewers are. Must be the big words.

I think if you're in such dire financial straits that telly in general should be pretty fucking far down on your list of priorities for any income you do have. And I don't know where I said I was well off. Just that I can afford £140 a year. Is that the measure of a persons solvency now?

And scrapping the license fee is hardly going to help hard up telly watchers is it? I've already posted the basic cost of the only alternative and it's a lot more.

Sky is a commercial venture and as such would be a better target for any anger on the cost of viewing. They're already charging you again for the freeview channels. That's channels you've already paid to watch through the license fee. How many channels out of those others you recieve from them do you actually watch?

Probably a tiny amount. They have the facilities to monitor your viewing and block channels at will as anyone who's dared unplug the phone line from the sky box while under contract will know. Why not ask them if you can only pay for the channels you want then?

Because they'll tell you to fuck off, because any choice you think you might have with them is purely an illusion.

" I personally love the attempts at some big budget efforts by the bbc, to take on the likes of game of thrones etc...and they are all fucking SHIT

fucking embarrassment is what the BBC are in terms of creative programmes

atlantis being one of them....

oh, and I also think Dr who is utter pish

I love you, couldn't agree more with you, they try so hard to copy these huge shows. Spooks trying so hard to be like 24, Atlantis as Game of Thrones (even remember on the news going on about how controversial it is with so many topless men) ha I remember when the BBC aired the first season of 24, wasnt long after Spooks started and 24 wasnt shown anymore.

Dr Who is the worst show I've ever seen, writing is terrible, effects even worse, acting is laughable.

Robin hood, merlin all terrible. Only decent thing the BBC ever did was Bottom, Only fools & Horses and Red Dwarf. "

How dare you not include BLAKES 7!

or Morecambe and Wise...

oh and Rose colored spectacles!

Yes, the good old beeb does produce some fantastic work but it's now time for some adverts between the progs, sad to say..
