Was Clarkson being racist?
Jump to: Newest in thread
According to The Mirror, they's uproar over this comment....
"That is a proud moment - but there's a slope on it,", Clarkson said taking about the bridge.
Richard Hammond replied, indicating the bridge's surface: "You're right, it's definitely higher on that side."
According to "people", 'Slope' is a ethnic slur relating to the facial characteristics of those from and of east Asian and southeast Asian descent.
I think this is just do gooders making something out of nothing. |

there was a lot more in the program that was a lot "closer to the edge" than that...
When they were talking about the drink "black cock"....I didn't stop laughing |

So you're not allowed to say slope because the Americans called the Vietnamese slopes (amongst other things) in the Vietnam War?
Jezza is not racist, he just makes fun of everything, but he doesn't bring outdated racist terminology into it! |

I had never heard of that slur before.
I don't think he was being racist, if he was it is an outdated american term.
The bridge they built did have a slope, I am sure the left hand side (going in the direction they drove across) was higher than the right hand side in many sections of that bridge. So he was correct in that observation about the bridge.

It won't be. 'Do gooders' it will be the media trying to stir up a scandal when there wasn't one in the first place. |

They're building a handmade bridge ffs! Of course its never going to be even sided!
Was there a man or woman of a specific ethnic persuasion standing on the bridge when the comment was made?
If people genuinely have complained about this, they really need to switch off the TV and take a stroll outside into the real world and get some sort of life!
Was this in the Daily Fail by any chance? |

I think that if it was a racist comment (which I'd find unforgivable!) then that would be a fairly subtle and sideways way to slip it in...
Clarkson may be a total prat - but I don't think that he'd even understand the word "subtle"..!

There is ALWAYS going to be at least ONE word in the Language at any given time that is going to piss off at least one person at any given time in any part of the world at any given moment.

Yes. And Hammond did shout "There's a slope on the bridge" in a strange tone.
However, being blissfully ignorant of the racist connotations of the word, we thought nothing of it. Now we've learned a new way to insult people
Streisland effect and all that. |

Storm in a tea cup though it wouldn't surprise me if Clarkson being Clarkson knew full well there was a potential double entendre there and used it more because he knew he probably shouldn't than with any racist motivation. He is a bit of a dinosaur and proud of it do I would suggest more likely to use an outdated term than a current one. |

He also cut the roof off his truck, that's a dig at bald men.
He painted his truck white, that's racist.
He tipped his rocks out, that's having a go at people who can't afford rocks.
He tipped the crane over, that's a hint at animal cruelty.
The list goes on, lynch him. |

IN - ON
I think if he had changed just one letter so the word ON becomes IN then he could'nt of been accused.
I remember seeing it and thinking 'OMG look at the slope' but I didnt even know it had a racist meaning.
Im still saying not guilty though even if I am wrong and nieve. Its not proven guilty so still innocent.

Top gear is the best staged comedy on TV at the moment. No I don't know or care if he was being racist. Like it was said before. the black cock thing was very funny and risque. but no a slope is a slope in this English language and the mirror/sun rivalry on top of the fact T G is so popular just gets sad but fun gits like us talking. |

Seems to me they were well aware of what they were saying and that it would cause a bit of upset. Its too set up these days! But there always some sort of scandal after each top gear episode lol
They must just sit and wait for all the complaints afterwards and fob off everyone as they get away with it all.

I just watched a clip of that part of the show and there is an Asian person on the bridge when he makes the comment "but there is a slope on it". As much as I dislike Clarkson I wouldn't have picked up on that word as being snidely used in a racist way. If it was it was very subtle, and as someone said earlier Clarkson doesn't generally do subtle.
Just for the benefit of people that don't recognise slope as a racist name for someone with eyes with the epicanthic fold it is in fact a very coomon name in other countries and on a par with the worst ones used for different races in the U.K. (of which I'm not going to give examples).
Clarkson is not a stupid man and is very well travelled and will definitely know the word can have a racist meaning, but it also is a valid word for describing the slant (could also be racist a word) on the bridge. On he will really know what he meant so it's a pointless argument. |

My point exactly. Clarkson isn't an idiot, he's been doing this for decades and knows exactly what he van and can't say on television. He almost certainly wouldn't have used a derogatory word to describe the person on the bridge and if he did the censors at the BBC Ethnic Peacekeeping Department would have cut it. |

Yes but I'm assuming there is no possible alternative meaning in that instance. It us not conceivable that there is someone of oriental origin that you might plan to ski down.

I didn't notice the reference when it aired, but on several re- _iews of the scene, I'd have to conclude it was deliberate.
Firstly, why shoot he scene when a random "native" has popped out of nowhere, just wait until he's crossed.
Secondly, study the stature and gait of the "native" - it looks more like a westerner - I'd wager it was one of the crew dressed up.
Thirdly, Hamster points to the lower side and says it's higher.
Slope is a well known and frequently used derogatory term for east asians with slanty eyes. You can hear Walken use it in Pulp fiction and I'm sure it would be in some or all of films such as Deer Hunter, Good Morning Vietnam, Apocalypse Now. I've certainly been aware of the term since my youth (a while ago now).
Having said all that, I don't think they are racist, just irreverent. Clarkson likes to play the pompous bombastic non PC buffoon and he does it well.
I would even suspect that they may have alerted the press to it to get some column inches, knowing full well it would provoke debate, but also knowing that nothing could be proven. |

I like Clarkson and Top Gear, but having watched the programme knowing how the phrase can be interpreted, I would have to say that they knew exactly what they were doing and they should be disappointed with themselves. It wasn't even subtle, it was blatant racism dressed up to look smart and clever which it wasn't. |

Top Gear is pretty much scripted. They could have easily shot that scene without the person being on the bridge.
So therefore I definitely do think there is a case for it being a bad taste joke.
It's kind of their thing what with offending most people at some time or another. |

If im honest i think Clarkson is an opinionated twat, but he's no idiot.
In everything he does tv, newspaper columns etc, he slips in thinly (very thinly in some cases) veiled references which he knows will create a stir.
Why ? Because he understands the value of attracting the attention of the public who want to see and hear whats going to be next from him. |

I watched a very small exert..they converse how beautiful the bridge is..as a man walks towards them..
big twats says to little twat "only one thing wrong with it, theres a slope on it"
small pause
little twat says "that side is higher"
to be honest..it wouldnt surprise me IF he meant it as a racial slur...in a high brow racist manner
I dont jump to everything thats un-PC, but sometimes u can see intent behind words
He would make 'jokes' about scots, german or amish people..basically because he is very 'english'
like most entertainers/comedians..I cant be fucked with them anyway, especially if they aim to shock(in ways that may actually 'hurt' people..like ur frankie boyles etc

How pissed off must he have been to find out that he is Scottish not English (kind of)
It seems that his home town, Doncaster was ceded to Scotland as part of the treaty of Durham in 1136 as part of a peace deal, and has never been revoked.

Some things are just wrong and shouldn't be simply accepted "because they happen" or ignored because some don't see the big deal.
If this was intentional, it was unacceptable behaviour. |
