Its a bit like the betamax vhs thing in the 90s. The betamax was slightly better but over priced so died off first. Its got to be windows for the long term.

Windows user here too. Never had a reason to use a Mac and Windows does all I want it to plus I think it's a very worthy cause to help Mr Gates maintain his lavish lifestyle hehehe

Sorry to say but your Mac can still be attacked by a computer virus, it's just less likely to happen but it's not a never!

Windows for me anytime!

not a never, but since 1993 I've used apple machines and have never once had an issue with them, sounds like a good running record, one windows cannot and never will match in my opinion

Meant to add some of the reasons why it is less likely to happen on a Mac

1. Newer Macintosh operating systems, such as the Mac OS X, is built on the Unix kernel, which is one of the oldest and most secure operating systems available.

2. Microsoft Windows is used by a lot more users. Because more users use Microsoft Windows, it is a lot better of a target than Apple Macintosh computers.

3. Most of the virus writers are familiar with the IBM platform and Microsoft Windows, and therefore are only going to be able to create a virus for that platform.

4. Many of the tools and scripts used to help users create viruses or other malware are designed for Microsoft Windows.

As I said previously a Mac can still be attacked by a virus though!

Mac at work and at home here. They look cool, they work brilliantly, they run smoothly and you don't have to spend ages setting up shortcuts to do things. They're led by design and what the user is actually going to do with it, rather than try and cram in so many features that it slows it down to the point of stopping randomly.

To the lady who said Windows for the longevity...I guess the last 33 years should be discounted?

I'm a Mac!

"hang on you put 4 bullet points about mac's......... "

Aye I know but it's still a boring subject for a swinging site - The OP first said a Mac could never get a virus so I was only highlighting the reasons why it can, but is unlikely.

He then agreed it could happen........ god I am sending myself to sleep now - Just Mac users seem to believe their data etc is safe from attack and take less precautions, so it's worse for them when the odd attack does happen - right am off back to my work and my superb windows based pc

Because there isn't as many people, businesses, etc that use a Mac over Windows PCs - read the reasons i posted above again

Mac's are great until they have a problem then you need to add an extra zero onto your repair bill. Are they better? Not really as they both do a pretty similar job these days with apple using intel processors.

Do you often go out with nothing underneath them? Nothing at all? In Gateshead perchance?

I hate Macs with a passion. The only time I see one is when it's broken and they're such a complete pita to dismantle. Give me a generic PC any day.

The laptops are even worse than the desktops. Yesterday for laughs I gave the trainee an old Macbook G3 to change the hard drive. It only took him 3 hours lol. Then he gave up and I had to put it back together.

It all depends what I'm doing... At home I have a Windows PC, a Mac Mini and a Linux PC.

Sometimes some things work better in one environment than another.

I do my online banking and shopping on my Linux PC, some sites I have to surf using Windows, my Mac Mini is a media centre that's plugged into my telly, I play games in Windows, etc...

I like sitting on the fence

Would agree with you with the fence thing as some machines are better at different things. Same with opp systems.

Mac for me since 1993 but my love affair with Apple is wavering since they lost the "computers for the rest of us" mentality and became as bullying and controlling as Microsoft.

Well since Apple have stopped using Motorola CPU's and moved over to Intel you can now have a Mac that runs Microshaft Windows, why anyone would want to I don't know.

The early Mac's where always superior to their PC counterparts of the day but where rather limited in their options, where as the PC had a whole host of addon's and upgrades available to customize it to a users requirements.

As for MS Windows it's never been a great OS initially starting life as a graphical user interface to bolt on to MS-DOS (another one of Mr Gates's offerings) to eventually combining the two in one package. Because a lot of third party software developers wanted to write applications for the PC a lot of info about how to use the functions of the OS and hardware has become publicly available, one of the reasons why the PC became so popular and such a target for virus writers.

So what do I use, well it's a PC' running Linux
