I am interested in rehoming a dog from a loael animal centre, one of the dogs I am interested in is a deaf dog.

Has anyone owned a deaf dog, or had experience of working with a deaf dog. I have done some research, but the best info is normally never on the websites.

Crete or LANCASTER

Don't worry. They learn your hand signals. My dog hears, but if I look at a ball a couple of times, he goes and gets it.etc

Sheffield

Our old dog went deaf when she was about 7. She lived to nearly 18 with no issues and learned hand commands really well. The only issue with a deaf dog, and to be honest it's a none issue, is to not walk up and tap them from behind as it can startle them.~

Good luck in the adoption!

I have molly. A three legged long legged patterdale jack russell. . . And breathe . . she's Profoundly deaf. But so intelligent. I found that she looks at what i look at and therefore eye contact is ever so important to understand. Also very reassuring for the dog. if a bitch she will look to you for everything. Bonus as will be very loyal. But you will have to find a place thats welcoming to pets for your holidays. . . prob for ten years. Seperation anxiety is bad and can occur in deaf dogs esp if seperated from primary carer. very stressful. Hard work but a very very good deed if you take the plunge so to speak. Good luck j

Fingers crossed for you. Hope it works out for you.

There are a few internet sites for support and advice for owner with deaf dogs.

Hopefully the rescue centre will be able to offer on going advice for you, or point you in the right direction.
