robots in the workplace
Jump to: Newest in thread
back in the 1980s, i went on a tour of the JCB factory in staffordshire, there were hundreds of workers in each and every department,
last week, i went on another tour of the same factory, what was immediately obvious was that there were massive parts of the factory with only one or two workers, sometimes never saw a soul.
the place was full of robots doing the work of all these people that used to work there, such a sad sight really.

And there will probably come a time when they stop putting a driver/operators seat in them as they will become a robot in themselves. With ever increasing population and diminishing employment opportunities its not going to end well.
Rolls Royce are working on a project to remove the crews from merchant ships, having them controlled by a fraction of the people in a control room that is ashore. Google have had a driverless car driving around the US for a while, it will be lorries etc next. |

saw on tv (probably top gear) think it was richard hammond in a driverless army lorry that delivers supplies to the front line.
there is also driverless cars being tested on the roads too, even now, we have cars that park themselves on sale |

Just remember how 'Tomorrow's World' promised us flying cars and a working day of 3 - 4 hours?

"Sad but cheaper and more reliable than humans.
People want cheap goods... "
Machines definitely remove most of the worry of human error (assuming they've been programmed right in the first place!) - but I'd refer to them as being more 'economical' rather than cheaper.
The business wouldn't survive if it's diggers were twice as expensive to buy due to labour costs even if the end product was just as efficient and reliable.
Look at any industry and it's the same - hand made cakes, bespoke suits and Morgan cars might all be nice to have - but they're niche markets rather than the norm.
Progress helps both businesses survive and customers afford their wares!! |

Its not a sad sight to see... one day as technology gets so advanced they will free mankind from all meaningless jobs.
A human being is not meant to be stood behind a check in desk 10 hours a day swiping goods through a scanner, a human being is not meant to be stood on a factory line doing same process every 50 seconds over and over.
its soul destroying... as children we are have so much creativity and passion inside of us yet once we start secondary school its taken out of us as we get prepared to be any other wage slave in the workforce.
Most successful people are ones that didnt even finish school.
I doubt ill ever see it in my time but one day there will be a world where money is a thing of the past, the love for power and the acusistion for monatery and material things will pass and future generations will look back and think how primitive we are.
my thoughts anyway ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

I wouldn't want to live in the world in future generations, even non manual labour is at risk, how many bank tellers have been made redundant because of ATM's and cashless methods of payments. All in the name of convenience and greater profits for the few. Progress ![](/icons/s/confused.gif) |

I've done all my banking online and via mobile banking for the last two years and haven't used a counter since god knows when. Makes my life far easier as I'm working all over.
But the last time I went in my local branch it was like the apple store - the banking hall was full of staff rather than a line of people sitting behind counters, all talking to customers, rather than paper pushing and dolling out small amounts of dosh the customer could have got in seconds from the cashpoint rather than queuing for ages over their lunch break.
Definite progress as far as I'm concerned. |

Anyone researched resource based economys like the venus project promotes?
Or abuntu a world without money.
watched a guy doing a talk on stage explaining how to get from where we are now to a world without money and for me it made perfect sense and could see it work but would require free thinking, open minded people. .. but seeing as there is too many greedy people it'll probably never happen. |

If all the work is being done by much fewer people how are the rest going to pay for their life of leisure? It is going to take a few more generations yet but it's going to be problematic.
China is the only country that I'm aware of that has tried to control its population expansion by introducing laws on the number of children people can have, try doing that in a democracy. |

the problem with socio-economic ideals like this is they are undone by one vital factor, human nature.
They rely on everyone being both willing and able to share resources, unfortunately most of us are unwilling or unable to put aside greed, jealousy and envy. |

People thought the industrial revolution was going to lead to mass unemployment. It didn't, it just meant there were cheaper goods available from a more efficient manufacturing process and the nature of work changed.
Progress is good !! |

The world population has now increased 7 fold, the industrial revolution created jobs, robotics doesn't, how many factory jobs are lost by the creation of one robot factory. Same with computerisation. We are now in a global economy and we import much more than we export. We also now import finished products instead of raw materials to turn into finished products. We Progress and we always will, it is not always for the good of the average person though. Industry replaced with call centres etc. Internet banking and ATM's, we all use them at the expense of jobs in the local bank branches, as with the self service checkouts in the supermarkets, which in turn have created havoc with local shops and town centre shops.
We see poverty in this country as having a council house and having to go to a food bank. Go to India, Indonesia etc where there are no safety nets, where children work in sweatshops so people can buy their £1.99 tops in Primark. Places where there is no running water and sanitation and people die from the lack of basic necessities. Progress is great isn't it![](/icons/s/wink.gif) |

"so the robots took the jobs of dozens of men
but the JCB took away the jobs of dozens of men with shovels "
But you could say the JCB reemployed them making complicated shovels. Until the robot made them redundant, apart from the maintenance man. |

I used to work in a car factory in Derby and one of my mates who'd been injured through doing the same stuff all day (I got that, too), was transferred to look after a computer. He used to sit opposite the biggest and most impressive machine in the weld shop. He always said that whenever people were being shown round they'd all take one look at this big impressive machine, then spend more time looking at him drinking tea. ![](/icons/s/2/cute.gif) |

"How long before pilotless planes?
Were it not for passengers fear of having nobody 'upfront' I think we'd have them already."
An old joke about pilotless planes - in the cockpit they have a human and a dog. The human is there to feed the dog, and the dog is there to bite the human if he/she tries to touch anything. |

Yes, progress is great. Are you blaming third world poverty on industrial automation ? |

We don't make much low end stuff any more we make High end goods. Out biggest exports are nuclear reactor components and aviation products (followed of course my arms and military equipment of which we're one of the biggest and best producers)
So yeah we don't have as many menial jobs but glee have a lot more skilled jobs |

"It's when the robots start making robots you have to worry.
I believe Skynet went live August 12 1997, by August 29 it had gained self awareness. Shits real yo!"
They do.
A human cannot make the components nessecery quickly nor accurately enough.
So cnc robotic mills make them |
