Serious question. Everyone hates these kind of people, but can compulsive lying or having an over imaginative frame of mind be an illness, which the person can help?

I never have or never will. Yes it causes arguments at times, but atleast people know where they stand.

I admit if I didn't like the answer I was about to give. I'll word it so it wasn't lying, but not all the truth was told. Now I think "what the hell , if they don't like it, tough".

Isn't that to do with convincing others you are unwell? Different to compulsive lying.

near Glasgow

An ex-colleague caused huge problems, work-wise, by conning and lying to customers.

A customer, who knew him and his whole family, described the whole family as being "compulsive liars"! Some of the examples she quoted me, plus some of the stuff I already knew, would suggest that it wasn't just a matter of simple lying. The truth of some of the stories/lies would very easily and quickly come to light, so why would a supposedly mature/sensible adult tell them in the first place?

is named after him but the actual syndrome relates specifically to pretending to be ill or inducing symptoms of illness in themselves (or others in Munchausens by proxy). Other wise known as factitious disorder

compulsive lying spans all sorts.
