Hawick

I found this on another site but thought it crosses over to our community.

Many mobile phones including the I-Phone and an increasing number of digital cameras have Geo-Tagging facilities. This technology adds the location of where the picture was taken to the picture file. Anyone with the correct software, including freely available Google Picasa / Google Earth can, with a couple of clicks, view the exact location where the picture was taken.

It is possible for anyone using Google / Earth to fly to the location where the picture was taken and look down on the roof of the property. One click and you are in “street mode” standing outside the front door of the property concerned.

Things that can be done –

On your phone or camera you can switch off the Geo-Tagging option.

If you have existing pictures you can use a suitable program such as Exif Tag Remover Or Google’s Picasa to remove the offending data.

Again, using something like Picasa / Google Earth, change the coordinates of the picture to those of the Mayor’s house.

What ever you do, do not stop sending the pictures - we all enjoy them.

Please be careful.

DON'T PANIC!

The EXIF data gets automatically stripped from images loaded up to here (and all the major Social Media sites)

No one can find anything out about your pics, other than the size and the day they downloaded it to their own device, which isn't going to help a lot!

Just another internet scaremongering hoax, although this one did have some basis in truth a number of years ago.

Nice house

What do you think of the new curtains in the back bedroom?"

Nice colour, although they seem to have a slight soiling on one side.

Think about this, the police would be able to pinpoint the location of child porn images etc.

Yes, a tradesman left something in it and it had to be removed, involving a little redecoration

Why can't people do some research before scaremongering.

"Why can't people do some research before scaremongering."

Because the sort of people that scaremonger aren't the sort of people to question what they are being told

No but I'm perfectly capable of uploading one of my own images that I know has the exif data intact, then downloading it and loading itinto Photoshop to discover, guess what, no exit data...happy now?

Step one: use a camera to take photos, not your phone.

Problem solved.

(unless you care about people knowing that you're only using the default 18-35mm lens your camera came with. )

I was not doubting your IT capabilities just simply asking if you are a Fabswingers Administrator making an official statement. You are not.

So you know this to be true because you have not been able to do it. OK. Thank you.

I agree. I would however like to see a formal statement from Fab about it although I know the Forum IT elite seem happy the EXIF data is stripped out.

I wouldn't worry about the fab admins knowing where we live and play compared to the spooks at GCHQ who will be monitoring such obviously weird people as are on here and would be able to see the EXIF data. I mean one of them was found dead in a holdall.

Hang on a minute there's loud banging coming from my front door, and the really loud sound of a helicopter overh...........

How much proof do you need? To be honest I doubt if Admin even knew they were stripping the exif data, as whatever the software they bought off the shelf to handle image uploading is probably doing it!

You carry on with your naive conspiracy theory if you wish though, I'll just carry on being one of the Forum IT Elite and continue to do my own research, rather than have it spoon fed to me.

I'm happy the exif data is being stripped out because it, err, is.

Try the experiment yourself, it's loads of fun.

Not true, a real camera will a) Store far more exif and tiff data than a phone and b) my £150 Point and Shoot and £3000 DSLR's all have GPS built in.
