A new Contraceptive For Women Protects Against HIV As Well As Unwanted Pregnancies is in the news for the first time today. I've copied & pasted this instead of using a link.

A new contraceptive designed especially for women will protect not only against pregnancies, but also HIV.

Scientists have created the device, which lasts for up to three months, to deliver contraceptive medication and drugs that protect against HIV and herpes.

Developed by biomedical engineer Patrick Kiser from America's Northwestern University, the gadget has been billed as a "significant advance" in drug delivery technology.

The tool delivers controlled doses of the drugs tenofovir, a antiretroviral medication, and contraceptive levonorgestrel for 90 days.

Details of the device have been published in the online journal Public Library Of Science ONE.

Mr Kiser and his team explain how they developed the tool so that it could deliver fixed doses of the drugs over a prolonged period.

"The differences between the two drugs are huge, which presented us with a design challenge," Mr Kiser said.

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Now wait for the report of the increase in risky behaviour because people feel safer.

And of more men refusing to wear condoms because this is available and they expect women to use it.

Oh, and why is contraception so often seen as the responsibility of the woman?

I don't think I'll be relying on a widget to protect me from disease. No glove, no fucking chance!

I don't think I like the vsounbd oif any contraception described as 'the device'

How can it protect against HIV? I didn't think there were preventative treatments for HIV as yet?

it's the antiretroviral medication. that's basically supposed to stop any virus that gets in your body from replicating and taking over. the same as what things like tamiflu are supposed to do for the flu. it will likely be approximately as effective, as well. no chance of me getting one until a LOT more is known AND they upgrade ot to cover tyre hepatitus virus as well. herpes and hiv are bad,but they aren't the only things out there.

Have they conducted clinical trials yet? I'm always dubious of anything that's pumping more chemicals into your body and for which at the moment there is no follow up data.

Thats what I was thinking. The contraceptive alone can have some serious side effects without the added complication of antivirals. I dont think I will be trying this one. x

Apart from condoms I can't find a contraception that agrees with me had terrible side effects off all. Of them so we gave up and p has now had the snip so I won't be trying any other will stick with condoms to play with others if they don't like it then they lose out
