I know 4 guys who did that in Antarctica the year before last. They scavenged a lot of the parts from the old Halley base which was being decommissioned.
I have some video clips and some photos somewhere. The noise was phenomenal. |

I have the schematics and instructions on how to make one, they're really easy. I'd like to do what Colin Furze did and fit one to a push bike

I looked at some plans a while back, I can't remember exactly what it suggested using but it was something like the insides of an old style cylinder vacuum cleaner for the outer casing with minimal modifications. It is going to annoy your neighbours though. |

You could hear the engine running 100 miles away if i did , it would not have to be that big,
The engines from doodlebug were not that big , it was the diameter of the tubes and the restriction that produced the power |

Have you seen the pulsating steam engines you can make quite easily, they have made them large enough to power boats, again very loud when scaled up. You can make them out of cans on a small scale and power them by a candle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_pop_boat |

I thought there was only just enough power/thrust to maintain the speed gained from launching via the steam catapult.
Either way, I've decided I'm going to build a small proof of concept version first and then move on to a full scale in the summer.
After that I'm going to build a proper jet engine using an old turbocharger. |
