Unless you're a virgin who's had no sexual contact (oral, touching and sex) then you can catch an infection.
Even condoms don't prevent stis.
Therefore some folks get routinely tested.

Not a virgin, nor celibate. Was with the same partner for 10yrs and had regular annual check ups through private medical cover with my employer. Not been to family planning clinic for about 20yrs. |

If you're meeting people now you should be checked. Just because you had the same partner doesn't necessarily mean they always had the same partner.
It's the GUM dept/clinic now for sexual health.
