Do you think the UK has them right?

I dont think its right that you can not drink alcohol or smoke a cigarette but can be mature enough to have a child.

No matter what age they put the age of consent too people will still have sex underage if there's no one to stop them. It's just human nature

Do you agree with it being 16 though?

Do you want to raise the age of child birth, or lower the age of the smoking and drinking?

You could just choose to educate more about the pitfalls of any of them.

Having age limits doesn't seem to stop those that want to do them so we may as well concentrate on educating them to make sensible decisions in the first place. Children always have and always will rebel against the system. Ask any 15 year old if they think of themselves as a child or a young adult.

So what ages would you have for restrictions? I agree they seem a bit Topsy Turvy.

ok just my opinions and im sure people would do things illegally regardless of the law and its restrictions

17 - learn to drive a car and pass your test with a minimum of 40 hours paid lessons

18 - can have a licence for driving (regardless if taught by a parent/friend etc)

18 - Smoking, Sex, Marriage, purchasing Aerosols, Fireworks

21 - Alcohol

So you can join the armed forces and serve and die in a conflict zone before you can legally buy alcohol?

Since the legal age of consent is roughly equal in Europe from 14 to 16 , why would you want it raised to 18 ?

i know its not the goverment directly saying 'you can have sex now go forth and multiply'.. education is a big part of sex and reproduction

but at those young ages with it being given the 'OK' legally to have sex i do not feel the majority of the CHILDREN are responsible enough to have their own. Minimum wage for a 16yr old is next to nothing and think the only job you can get at 14 is still a paper round. Also a lot of todays youth are still in education.

You can restrict at point of sale cigarettes and alcohol. It's not mature being knocked up before you're old enough to vote (I could think of a word or two) but it's impossible stop sex!

I think 16 is about right for age of concent, but 18 for drinking and 16 to get married is a bit stupid it to me, you can make a massive life decision but can't have a few cheeky sherberts, I think marriage voting and drinking should all be the same age, and I think 17 is just about the right age really

You cannot serve on the front line until the age of 18 that's not UK law but part of the Geneva Convention.

Look at our European neighbours lower age on what we have and seem to be more responsible, compared to the US where drinking is 21. Think younger on drink is a more sensible way. IE in other countries 14 for drinking as long as your with adults and its with a meal.

I dont think there should be age restrictions just age guidelines as people mature a different ages what is good for one maybe not good with others and with sex as well as alcohol its all about education x

Considering the health effects of alcohol and cigarettes, and the general consensus on recreational drugs they should be banned completely

Not up to date on marriage law, but don't you need permission from a parent or guardian to marry at less than 18?

As the teenage pregnancy rate is already dropping it would seem that some things other than the legal age of consent is already effecting the numbers. So should remain as is.

I'm aware of that which is why my question was only related to the alcohol...

In the Ann Summers shop in meadowhall the toys and dvds are kept kinda separate from the underwear and the is usually an assistant supervising the area. Last time we were in there were some teenage girls in would say 16ish, they very quickly blocked their access to the toy area but had no problem with them browsing underwear.

I just think they should choose an age where they think people are an adult and that should be the age for everything.

Your adult enough to get married and have a baby but you're not adult enough to drink/smoke/vote/get paid the same as everyone else minimum wage (I think that applies from 18 or even 21??) it's ridiculous.

18 seems about right to me. X

just to put it out there.. would you have been better off with a toy rather than messing around with a lad at that age and risking pregnancy?

yeah can understand your logic.. think the key word in that is 'adult'

children having children is a scary prospect. also if we reduce these ages our own childhoods become shorter.

No I don't agree I think sexual adventure is all part of growing up and helps you define yourself and who you want to be. I met my husband and had sex with him underage (15) but we were always very careful and I didn't become pregnant till I was 20. Just because you're underage doesn't mean you're not capable of making sensible choices. Maybe I was one of the lucky ones who felt avle to discuss this with my mam before hand and she took me to the doctors to go on the pill. I myself have a 15 year old and would have no problem with her having sex if she was in a commited relationship and being safe.
