I have heard of elderly gay men being scammed in the east mids in recent years. You can flatter some women and men and they are putty in your hands. Its tragic, but often conmen and women play to the victims ego. Look at all those sad old twats roughing it in Phuket, having been fleeced by their young girlfriends. I remember see all the pensioners and divorcees in the acopolypse now bar in Ho Chi Minh City thinking its only a matter of time!!

Is Take A Break the font of all scamming knowledge?

Unfortunately I think people see what they want to see and believe what they want to believe. Those things happen to other people and they "know" the person they are dealing with and s/he would never do anything like that.

Slighty off topic (not to do with dating sites that is) but a chap who used to live near me, one of the humblest people you would ever meet, was conned twice.

He was (he has passed away now) a WWII veteran and reached 98 years old. Lovely man.

Unfortunately he was 'to trusting' and when people who said they were council workmen turned up he would let them in.

They then stole from him.

At the time he was living independently in a flat, would potter up to our local for a drink and a chat.

Due to what happened his children decided to put him in a home.

Sad state of affairs all around.

I think that older people trust authority more and tend to believe that if someone says they are from the council or in my mum's case microsoft that they actually are. My father told me that if the bank rang him he would tell them his pin number "because its the bank", of course we put him right but you can see how it happens.

People get conned for many reasons greed, loneliness, naivety and stupidity.

I think you are right. Jock was none of the last paragraph though, he was just from a generation that trusted people and, until he was conned, had no reason not to.

It is difficult to say whether these incidents cost him his life but he was moved to a home, an area he lived in for 20+ years, after these incidents happened, his health declined after the move but he was also 98.

Whatever, people who prey on other peoples weaknesses are nothing but scum

In my own little world

I used to have a fake (paid for by dating site) profile, where I made out that I was recently widowed, of my own means and looking for the love of my life.

Used to get all the scammers, mainly overseas, all the stories and would get me off the dating site asap (because they are monitored), I would go with the story, and then they would ask for money transfers, which we'd then get the details, their IP address, and for those in the UK, the police would take a visit and the overseas, they built up a file and worked with their counterparts overseas to go further up the chain. This was about 8 years ago, and I doubt much has changed.

There are many vulnerable people out there.

The will and there allways have been vulnerable folk and others who will exploit..

listened to a lady on radio 5 live last week who was conned out of £150,000 and a bloke who handed over £60,000 in the latest 'boiler room' scam..

both were educated, articulate and both thought they could get an easy return..

if it sounds too good to be true it probably is..

"Poor women I hope that get some of their money back..."

My first reaction would be to agree, however after a little thought I think it would be better if they got nothing back, and no hope of ever getting it. With wide publicity it could save a lot of other people from falling into the same trap.

It's bad enough when scammers target people on websites but it's worse when a site owner is the scammer. Recently a swingers site owner has been convicted of fraud and sentenced to 2 years for fleecing gullible members out of £40 with bogus messages from fake profiles.
