So just measured my waist, 40 inch, happy with that..... Then I measured my stomach, sodding hell, 47 inches. Any idea how to get rid of that?

10 sit ups every morning, 10 sit ups before your go to bed.

10 right elbow - left knee, 10 left elbow - right knee cross sit ups every morning and before you go to bed.

You will be doing 60 a day. 30 sit ups every morn and eve. But as you will be using different muscle groups (stomach, left and right side) it should be quite manageable.

Do it as a daily routine. Routine is key to any exercise. There is no point beasting yourself and not going back to exercise

Eat the right things and exercise, it's the only fool proof way to slimming down. There's no great cheat or anything like that...........

I've been following that advice since October last year and lost just shy of 4st, 6in off my waist and fitter than I've ever felt.

To add. I remember being out in Hawaii and saw this hugely muscled guy doing his morning work out. He was lay on the grass, doing what effectively looked like sissy sit ups. He was on a very slight incline, hands beside head and lifting his head/chest up maybe just a couple of inches. He was going this quite fast, and doing quite a lot of them, but he was only concentrating on his upper abs. By not doing the full curl it meant later on - he sat up to his knees and again leant back maybe a couple of inches to do sit ups that worked his lower abs..

He was absolutely ripped, no fat on him whatsoever, but doing an exercise that women would do to tone up very effectively.

what if you can't do sit ups? I mean really can't not can't be bothered. Are crunches as good?

It doesn't matter how many sit ups or crunches you do, if you have a belly your abs will never show through. You need to get your diet sorted.

I do 240 crunches a day and I have a one pack

You can do all that till the cows come home but if you are not eating correctly you'll have great abs....you just wont see them under the fat. Diet, diet,diet....you are what you eat.

Potentially lay on something soft to support your lower back and bring one leg up to your chest, the slower the movement the better. Do each leg then do both (both will be harder because of the extra weight) Bust the slower, and more controlled the better. Maybe a pause for 5 seconds before you rest the leg each time?

I dont train anymore, but I have never had a good diet. All I did was tone not rip muscles, so it meant many repetitions of the same exercise. Sometimes just using body mass, sometimes using weights to add resistance. I was tight as a drum but do appreciate what you mean

AT 40 its harder to loose weight so dont expect it to drop off quickly. I would recommend "fit for life" by Ranulph fiennes for exercise and dietry tips. Its the only really good exercise book ive seen. It isnt very good for health to yoyo exercise to achieve short term goals. So really you need to make your life more healthy through being more active on a daily basis and eating better food. get the book and follow his advice and in 12 months if you arent feeling fitter and got that belly down i will give you £100. A trip to the doctor would also be advised to tell them of your exercise and dietry plans.

After some of my own research prior to starting my exercise regime, one thing stood out.

Sit-ups/crunches do nothing to lose fat around the belly. They build the abdominal muscles yes but you can't target fat burning. It's just a myth, just do a search on sit-ups don't burn fat and there's many many articles that explain it better than I can.

Lie on your back, bring you legs up in a vertical shape, push your bum up, keeping legs straight and up and hands by your side. Get rid of the chocolate, biscuits, pies and oils, use fry light and eat plenty of veg and fruit, especially bananas for when exercising. 1 banana = 1 hour of energy

30 sit ups are a lot quicker to do than walking, running, swimming, jogging, rowers or cross trainers. Sure there are better ways to lose weight, but as a simple, fast and quick exercise that you can easily fit into a daily routine, they are very goo.

The motivation to get down to the gym is often the thing that defeats you, as you dont just go there for one muscle group. You go there to get your monies worth and have a full work out. But exercise within the home is very effective. You could run up and downstairs, but actually, you wont do this for more than a fad period of a week at most I'd guess so it's better to keep to regular amounts and increase when you wish (when your motivation increases, which it will as a result of simple exercise).

Ok my advice would be... don't do sit ups at all ever xxx

As mentioned above you need to make a habitual lifestyle change x

There are over 5000 differant bits of advice we could all give however if you don't understand why you should be doing them and how they combine and work you won't do them correctly or more importantly adapt them to work in tune with your body , lifestyle and commitments x

The very last thing you should really do is ask for advice on a forum , there is no possible way anyone, even a pet similar to myself could give you the detail and attention required . You get simplistic sound bites and although parts maybe true you still won't know which parts or how to know if you're doing the correct thing wrong x

My advice buy a couple of books , do some rounded research , talk to a health professional , talk to your gym. Avoid any title using the word diet or fit in 30 days

So eat smart, exercise smart sleep well but you need to understand why and how. To be effective have a long term whole life benifit and possibly the most importantly avoid injuries .

It is pointless and dangerous to go on a low carb diet for example if you don't know why it can help

And why not sit ups , well for the time employed they burn possible y the least calories for one of the greatest risks of injury .If you follow a well constructed fitness regime your core will be adequately stimulated xx I have not done sit ups or crunches for over 15 years x

Part of any exercise regime is motivation. Doing something simple is the first step. A change of lifestyle is a very big commitment, but adding something manageable to your daily routine will lead to further exercise as motivation increases.

I am not saying sit ups are the be all and end all, there could be something else he could do (that doesnt stress his joints). But to just to roll out of bed in a morning and do a few before breakfast is easy to slip in before moving on to different exercises.

Effectively burning more than you put in. You could eat 100 burgers but if you burn 110 burgers you'll trim up. (thats not to say you wont keel over from burger disease, just saying diet can be such a kill word for exercise.) Once you feel fitter - you will eat better, but thats not to mean you cant have a day eating what you like. Just remember to burn it off next time you hit the gym

U can't crunch for abs until the fats gone all u do is push the fat out further.

Calorie deficit is the only real way, eat less and move more.

Try replacing high calorie food or drinks for lower and do some training

Alcohol is one of the worst for calories in one hit so maybe start there if u drink

As most people have said, to get rid of a belly no amount of sit ups will help,

Its all diet and cardio.... avoid bloating foods like bread and pasta and foods with gluten.

try avoid eating any carbs after 6pm.

go to local Holland and barrets or look online for t6 tablets... they surpress the appetite so your not as hungry.

Best of luck

Don't do sit ups and certainly don't do them just as you get out of bed xx quite honestly you would be better wanking for 15 mins

Why ?

Firstly we have no idea about the op s physical condition , his posture his back strength, past injuries ?who is there to verify correct form bad form will cause issues, Would he be prone to hernia ? Much must be assessed before we safely gave advice on most exercises x

Secondly has he warmed up ? No just got out of bed , at least a 10 minute light warm up before .

A 15 20 minute walk every morning would be recommended and that would burn more fat and be more sustainable for life than crunches xx body weight squats after could be a progression if knee joint is stable after being tutored on correct form x

Poor form causes pain and injury on most exercise x

Join a gym for 1 month thsts 35 quid . Use the knowledge from the staff that's a lot you could learn in a month then use that information to do body weight exercise at home , in the park at work .

You CANNOT spot train fat, and at that excess exercise is going to need to be a long time.running each day to even make a sent in the calorie excess you're eating

diet is going to be the only thing that's gonna shift it, least at any manageable or worth while pace.

Oh and you can't "cut all fat out of your diet" you'd die and be able to eat hardly any food stuffs .

dietary fat does not equal body fat the calorie excess does,

Eat a sensible diet and exercise.

Don't spend ages plodding on a treadmill either. Buy a book called "Fast Exercise". You'll see that there's plenty of scientific evidence to show that you don't need to spend ages exercising to torch body fat.

To obtain abs to show tjrough your belly. A guy has to be approx 11% body fat.

Doesnt matter how many situps or ab crunches that are done.....they muscle will just push out the body fat and look bigger.

A good diet. Cut out lots of carbs.

Food energy in-exercise engery burned.....got to be less. Then weight less.

Its right you cant spot burn fat.

11% body fat is not easy to maintain.bodybuilders compete at approx 4-6%

Are you confused enough yet ?

There are a million opinions on exercise, weight loss and many of them are simply wrong. Fads that dont work designed to part you with your cash.

Find someone you can trust and follow there advice to see if it works for you.

I trusted ranulph fiennes book, co written with Dr mike stroud a leading authority on diet and sports nutrition simply because ranulph fiennes is quite possibly for his age the fittest man on the planet. He has a proven track record over many decades of some of the toughest endurance feats ever under taken.

Brightonsteve I really don't think you need it

I have decided to get myself back into exercise for Lent i am going to go back to my power walking for 5 miles everyday for the six weeks and then drop it back to every two days. There is a Marathon walk over night in September in Essex called the Shine walk that i really want to do, no date has been set yet.

It's the same as the "Moon walk" but you don't have to wear bras for this one !!

"Do those slendertone electronic machines work? "

They won't get rid of much fat ...but apparently they'll give you decent abs underneath..

I echo the posters claiming the importance of a decent, balanced diet.

I cut cakes/biscuits/soft drinks etc and lost over a stone (back from 34 wast to 32) in a few months while not really improving other aspects of diet - still eating burgers et al...

My plan is to do the T25 exercise regime, along with my current diet of limited sugar....and then weights to get a little stronger.

If you're talking about high intensity interval training (HIIT) it's not an easy route, it requires you to be very fit and dedicated to begin with.

EVeryone is always looking for a magic quick fix, remmber the quicker it is the harder it is, t's easy to lose weight slowly over years in a way you wont even notice affecting your life, crashing it all off i na year though that;s going tobe hard work.

or you know just take a load of DNP lose it all in a months and risk dying in a bath of ice water while enduring horrific side effects.

It's the only quick and "effortless" (all you have to do is lie still and suffer) way to lose it.

It depends what part of your stomach, if it's average higher up but sags down lower that's usually water weight I believe, anything else is down to the foods you eat, good carbs/bad carbs, excessive amounts of fats in foods (although small amounts is good for you) just make sure you eat on a healthy guide line and use up the energy that you get from the foods, from that you should burn off any bad weight that your stomach is hoarding

It's not pointless at all, it's better to have a base foundation than none at all, if he does both they will catch up a lot quicker than just doing cardio, see it as two people at opposite ends of a street, they would get to each other quicker if they both run at equal effort to each other rather than just one running to the other, if that makes much sense

running 1 mile burns approx 100kcal and can damage joints and isnt really recomended for people who have a very poor fitness level and are 40 plus.

power walking/ hill walking 1 mile burns approx 80kcal and wont damage joints and is recommended for over weight and older peeps.

It is totally pointless, bad use of precious time and indeed counterproductive.

No beginner should do isolation exercises

All his muscle training should include to begin with are compound moves

Why use one muscle group that he will struggle to load effectively when in the same time frame he could use a whole body compound move which will elevate the heart rate and condition the body as a whole rather than out of proportion

If we wanted to justify any single muscle the quad or glute would be the best to train for increased mass as the added mass through daily activity would use more fuel xx. To grow ab mass is notoriously difficult and skilled to load the muscle correctly for hytrophy to occur .

I'll reiterate unless a person has a basic grasp and understanding random training advice can be counterproductive and physically harmfully x

Don't train abs x

I get what your saying but the one that has been running more would get their first

running 1 mile burns approx 100kcal and can damage joints and isnt really recomended for people who have a very poor fitness level and are 40 plus.

power walking/ hill walking 1 mile burns approx 80kcal and wont damage joints and is recommended for over weight and older peeps."

Cardio takes a while to build up though, if he was pushing himself more than his body is comfortable then yeah there's chance of injury but if he builds it up slowly and comfortably and does correct warm ups/cool downs etc then most times will be fine! I've come across people 50+ with an amazing cardio fitness level plus no problems with joins due to correct exercises

Abs strength isn't just for good looking abs you know, the strength it's self can help with a lot of other things, look at people who do strongmen competitions, I see a lot of them doing abs and they have big bellys/no visible abs but do it for the good ab strength does.

I've never had a problem with weight but from what close friends and other people I've spoke to about it a wide majority have had the same input on this

Lol at ab strength is just for looks you know xxx yes hunny I know lol

Core strength and stability is very important and doing crunches and sit ups are two of the least effective methods of obtaining a solid core xx dead lift is better, chin up is better , rowing is better, overhead press is better, squat is better, press up is better . In fact all free weight or body weight compound exercise s recruit the whole core in balance and for stability better than crunches with more calories used and less risk of injury

I never said which specific work out to do for abs though, I said he should what he's comfortable with, missing out muscle groups and training some more than others in fact heightens risks of injury but the point I was making, he shouldn't just not to abs due to being over weight

It's kinda hard to avoid the abs being recruited during most compound exercises , the main thrust of the debate had been training abs primarily through crunches and sit ups. When giving advice to a beginner they and many others would infer a comment such as train your abs as sit ups and crunches which are isolation moves

For example if I were to suggest he trains his biceps most would think of bicep isolation moves such as curls , dumbell or bar in strict form not many would associate chin ups or close grip pull ups .

Compound exercises are only better for the fact you can train a wider range of muscle groups using less energy and time, there are ab work outs that also work legs and back but the fact of it being an isolation workout should cause harm for a beginner as long as he doesn't over do it! But that goes for everyone really, regardless of age or size over working certain things cause high risks of injury so it's best to work to a pace he's comfortable with.

I love a good debate about fitness and exercise because so many people have different methods and opinions, good to learn something new and also share what you've been taught with other people

You can get away with doing back and bi's in one day then chest and tri's in one day, routine depends on preference I guess!
