175mph BIIIIGGGG smiles

SPALDING

So this weekend was caught short as was meant to be with a lady from off here. As I said it was shortened as she went home early.

So I woke up this morning by my phone ringing, it was one of my mates from my local bike club. He wanted to know if I fancied going out on a ride out with them.

To which my reply was "I'd love too, but no bike". He then said I could have his other bike. Which is a 2005 Yamaha R1. Let's just say within an hour I had jumped out of bed and got showered and was in my bike gear. God it felt good to be back on a bike again. Even though it's only been since November.

So he picked me up on his CBR Fireblade then went back to his to pick up the R1 and to meet with the rest of the club. Headed to the nearest petrol station for fuel, then hit the bends.

Went to Hunstanton and then the coast road to Great Yarmouth with stopping off at places along the way. Then ripped up the tarmac on the way home. I know the national speed limit is 70mph but we only slighty went over it lol.

I know at one point everything went to a blur. I so need to get myself another bike. Might ask if I can buy his R1

Living without a bike feels like you're sitting at the back of a room all the time, but being on a bike again today felt like I was at the front having fun. i know a guy who had to have his leg reconstructed after a crash at a race day. he has ridden pretty much most of his lie and raced extensively. when i met him he had a cage round his leg, pins in his bones and had a muscle graft because his original calf was smeared across the track.

That was just on a race day with no oncoming traffic - imagine if he had done that on a road when cars were driving around him as well... thisnk i'd be telling you i never knew this man dont you?

Whilst he has raced he always kept it to track days - would never risk his or anyone elses lives on normal roads. this is a guy i will applaud. not you and your mates.

well i went to nottingham today, in my car, and on a straight dual carriageway with almost no traffic on it. i put my foot down and got it up to 65 mph, which in my opinion is quite enough on public roads

That would be the least of your worries if you came off at that speed! I'm a firefighter of 20 years and a biker of 18 and that's utter madness. Last motorcycle accident I attended where someone was doing 3 figure speeds we had to scoop what was left up with a shovel. Best of luck with your new bike.

At speeds like that you cannot say no one was around. Things change so rapidly at 70 on the motorway so it must be so much more unpredictable at those kinds of speeds. There could have been somebody else there before you even had time to register it.

Next time you want to feel that alive again book a track day and don't endanger others.

You did what you did but please don't fool yourself or try and fool us by saying that it was clear when you did those speeds at 175 mph it can change from clear to not clear in a millisecond. I really hoped when I clicked in this thread that it wasn't going to be about this.

I didn't say it was clever, and we have had several casualties over the years from the club. The problem is when a group get together, things gets quicker and people push boundaries. Yes at that speed I then slowed up as I was out of my comfort zone, from then on I rode sensibly.

What happens if you hit a pothole at those sort of speeds?

At least on a track there are no lampposts, hedgerows etc to hit.

Speed doesn't kill, it's the sudden stop when something goes wrong that does it.

Clear with no one around? At 175 MPH you'll cover a mile every 20 seconds or so, just short of 100 M a second. Not enough time for your reflexes to stop your bike in a hurry. Not enough time to see any obstacles on the road immediately ahead of you, let alone, say, a small child running out in front of you, who you could have hit and killed, as well as killing yourself. Some people would say that's riding like a cunt.

No biker on this planet buys a bike and sticks to the speed limit. Every single biker has broken the speed limit and yes it was stupid, i admit that. Tbh it will probably be the last as it was scary and thats why I then slowed down.

Actually, we agree with just about everyone on this post with the exception of this post....being on a bike at high speeds is fab in the right circumstances, but not a public road. However speed doesn't kill...it's the people who can't drive or ride comepetently and appropriately that kill..... those who think it does should be campaigning for a speed limit of 4 mph (walking pace) so everyone can get out of the way...

Yes it is. Expensive though, but well worth it. We have all agreed that we need to do trackdays. Might see you around at some. Cadwell Park, Snetterton and Silverstone are our closest tracks.

175mph is 256.6 feet per second!!

Given the mass of the motorcycle and rider had you hit a car at that speed, regardless of who's fault it may be (but given that you were traveling at roughly a quarter of the speed of a 9mm bullet it's ALWAYS going to be your fault), you'd quite easily cut it in half, kill all the occupants and turn yourself into red mist.

If admin had any moral responsiblity they'd log your IP details and pass them on to the police. Not only are you dangerous you're also pretty pathetic and you don't deserve the privilege of having a license.

yes the club have a business policy where we are all on it so can ride each others bikes, and its expensive to do but we all chip in ans pay for the policy.

I have the same thing covers track days too its a great idea

I go to cadwell all the time its ony around 20 mins from me and its great fun ! Even camping over for the supers!!!

Of course speed kills, that's why there are speed limits that are meant to be abided by! It takes longer to stop if your going to fast!

Speed never killed anyone. Stopping suddenly, that's what gets you...

As someone else pointed out, I have already mentioned the sudden stop, your speed can kill others though.

As mentioned, a mm of steel in a cars bodywork is not going to stop something with that much momentum.

Slight difference though, 175mph on a public highway vs kicking a dog (although it's also abhorrent). Kicking a dog isn't likely to kill several people in a matter of seconds.

To be fair, he's identified his route and CCTV would have recorded his journey over several stages, and he's told us within this thread that he's done the speed, so in my mind the authorities *must* be able to do something about this...

Sorry chap but its unacceptable - on a track fine but on a road *no way* - no words can justify that behaviour...

99.9% of the time you're going to get away with it though. Was the motorway empty? If someone had pulled into your lane at those speeds how long would it take you to slow down? People don't always judge the speed of vehicles approaching in their mirrors very well. Your bike could end up on the wrong side of the road going head on into another vehicle. I've been quite fast on the back of a friends bike, you can't exactly start punching them in the ribs to slow down… it was the last time I asked him for a lift.

He hasn't mentioned his number plate, or exact times, could have been anyone on CCTV. Phone the police and report him, they will tell you there is nothing they can do.

I still think it should be reported and left to the police to decide. Given that most people have a GPS enabled phone nowadays I'm sure there (in fact I know) are ways of finding out if he did act like a Muppet on the roads.

Step 3: Analyse footage of route described - A1M part should be sufficient, look for a group of bikers and log registrations of the CBR and the R1.

Step 4: Confirm owner of R1 is within an half an hour of the IP source owner...

Step 5: Contact R1 owner - they would have been going as fast (OP confirmed it was a group ride)

Step 6: Throw the book at *them*.

Gatso's etc need to be approved by the government before they can be used to prosecute.

When average speed cameras were brought in, if you changed lanes you wouldn't be prosecuted. They still recorded the speed and were fully capable of doing multiple lanes, however the government had only approved them for single lane use. A loophole that has now been closed.

Not having access to the OP's IP address details would make that rather difficult, hence why I suggested that admin take responsibility. What he's claiming is a criminal act that could have had major consequences (thankfully it didn't) and he's already incriminated himself.
