Trying to connect laptop to tv......

Now I am not thick by any means, but I did think it would just be as simple as connecting the HDMI cable and it should automatically find it.
However, it keeps saying device not found, and when I try to refresh, it does do a quick search but gives up within 5 seconds, what the hell am I doing wrong? Simple instructions will help in this case!  |

Or on some there's a fn button and pressed in conjunction with the button with the pic of a screen on it should work!
Same kinda thing as if you were hooking up a projector |

Right, hang on, I'm getting exited here! I now have the laptop and tv in sync but just now it is just the sound and not the picture.....just the laptop home page, what have I done wrong? Or missed?  |
