I genuinely always thought it was japsy or japsye like that, didnt realise it had anything to do with japanese or eyes at all until I'd seen it spelled only a few weeks ago. I also thought that the only colloquial name for it (other than meatus) was japsye! Like you don't always say penis, you say knob or dick or cock or willy lol. |

it is when u think about it, as u are basically saying every japanese person has eyes that are essentially just a slit.They commonly have oriental shaped eyes, just as much as most negroids have wider shaped nostrils.But when we use that as a whole entire stereotype, we approach the problems of being somewhat derogatory.
If u really want to check, just think of the old films/tv like chan and a few more where japanese were routinely ridiculed...during/after WW2
same goes for Germans...while being of Caucasian race...they have been stereotyped in various ways...some horrifically,and some based on their 'odd' display of humour..or lack of |

Off topic a bit, I was on a course fairly recently and it was said that the phrase 'down to the nitty gritty' was a racial slur as it was coined to describe what remained in the bilges of slave ships at the end of a voyage.
I have googled it to find out about it and it seems that there is no proof about the origination of the phrase, which is not that surprising given the time period. |

Nitty Gritty being detrius is something that fell into folk lore a bit like one or two other words just because someone said so ...like chinese whispers.
There is a song ( i think from the 60's ) It was by Shirley Ellis I think and im not sure if Diana Ross did it too.
The nitty gritty was a dance back then. Getting Down to the Nitty Gritty just meant being base or basic or real ..... sort of like 'feeling' the music and groooooooooovin' ...... |
