I've wanted to open a community cafe and provide work experience to those who have been out of work for some time or those with criminal records or learning difficulties to get them on the employment ladder...to also be open to feeding the homeless and those on low income. |

It is to an extent as long as I make a profit from sales to the general public as that's the main customer base...the homeless thing was more of aside line and not the main focus...it was about producing homemade sandwiches and cakes to the general public as a cafe |

same, we have owned 3 pubs over the past 10 years, made a shedload of cash but more from buying them cheap, building business up and selling them on.
made much more that way than we did profits from trade, but 16-18 hours a day.
early retired now but do a bit to keep me occupied, i'm like a one man agency driving coaches and trucks for whoever needs me as and when... so much happier now |

I did it last year. If anyone thinks its an easy option, they're deluded.
But less than a year on, we are beginning to feel the benefits.
We wanted to do good basic pub style classics but with traceability and using no processed foods.
The best decision by a mile to go for it. Loving the satisfaction work brings. Never thought I'd ever say that! |

"I wouldn't open any restaurant as they have the highest failure rate for any start up business
What would you open out of interest?"
Anything software related where you have to pay annual maintenance fees and support fees |

I've acted for many restaurants over the years - it's not easy . Providing software and licence fees is where the money is now
Good luck with your place though ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

Margins for us are excellent. It's the volumes that could kill us! But no one ever got anywhere by not giving it their best shot.
It's going well and we are happy, which is beyond Rubies in the grand scheme of things. |

"Never ever go into the food or drink trade unless you are famous. Always have to work while everyone else is having fun. " You're right in saying this over the years I had my own company doing outside catering was full on with 2/3 weddings at times on a weekend and race days for 100s .. all sorts of things I loved it but would take me and staff all week to get ready .. so you have to love doing it all and not just the money as it takes over your life . My background is food and have been thinking of a place again as theres lots of pubs on the market I could do it but its the commitment to it all .. I keep saying to john we could get it running have staff work it .. but you really have to trust people to do a job as good as yourself .. I do up houses now to rent and sale and that's a lot easier , lol And if I had a place it would be fusion food , You fuse cultures and cuisines. You take the flavors and ingredients of one culture and produce them in the style of another .. I love making food from around the world and I think now with people going overseas more they like different foods .. and a cocktail bar so people could have a go at new drinks and mixes and good wines to match the food if people wish to do that .. Be nice to do something different that I love but not sure .As was thinking of laying back in the sun some place over seas . ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

Spot on, you have to love it or it will be the death of you! I worked in banking for years with a good salary, but was bored beyond belief! |
