I think you have to say yes after the problems they have caused. Ok they are a bit of fun but there have been well over a dozen fires in the last 12 months causing a lot of damage. |

By that then we should pull the plug on electricity as it kills and injures thousands per year! Get your router working then! |

I live on the flight path at Manchester airport the plans fly real low over my garden and the lanterns go up really high, so the area doesn't really let them off. Same with bonfire night, the organised bonfires have to wait for permission from the airport to let them off. Upside is cheap cab ride to airport. |

I'd say yes. We lit two at Christmas and the first got caught in a tree. The second looked like it was heading for some flats but took off upwards in time. Worse feeling of panic I've had since a multishot firework fell over and fired burning hot shots at my neighbours. Which should also be banned |

Cars don't kill people - drivers kill people
Unless the car exploded whilst it's being driven in which case it is the car...
Or its possessed by the devil like in the Stephen King book...
Or its a Transformer..
Hang on - I need to rethink this... |

if you were to walk around your average street at night lighting rolled up paper and casually discarding it wherever then you would rightly be stopped one would hope..
cant see any comparison between what are essentially airborne incendiaries and cars.. |

Well, let's see... How many people could get to work and do their jobs without cars? Rather fewer than with cars. So, cars contribute significantly to productivity and the economy.
How would the majority of the country get food, clothes and the essentials of daily living without motorised transportation to distribute them?
What do Chinese lanterns contribute other than damage, death, injury and expense? A glimpse of a light. Big whoopie. |

"Don't forget the metal parts of it and the damage it can do to animals..
they make non metal ones now. Still scary though
oh never knew that....i don't like them so don't use them..."
I think some of them are made with bamboo instead of metal but the majority are still metal wire. Cows etc eat them, cows are stupid.
A large airport in China was shut down after the land bordering the runways was set on fire by a lantern. |

Don't think there is much flammable farmland to worry about at the moment! Think those on the Somerset levels would welcome a few lanterns.
But yeah they can be dangerous in the 2 days of summer. |

Bet is was cooked by a Chinese person though…
How many lanterns fit in a 40 foot shipping container? Fookin loads. Cost of shipping per item is pennies. Cost of labour in lots of Asian countries is pennies compares to pounds in the UK.
Cheap shit that can be mass produced is 9 times out of 10 made in South East Asia. |

160,000 to a 40' container - shipping cost of £0.02 per piece.
Cost of actual lantern - approx £0.17

The first time I saw Chinese lanterns was at a Full Moon Party in Thailand. People came down to the beach at night and lit them. Some attached Roman Candle fireworks to them. The breeze carried them all out to sea. |

"maybe there should be a way they go out after 10 minutes?"
The fire aspect is only one of a few reasons they are not a good idea.
The fuel source needs to be big enough to generate lift, shrink that so it goes out quicker and it won't fly. If you add weight, by way of an extinguishing method, they won't fly.
Animals eat the remains sometimes, the wire used perforates their stomachs and they die, not nice. |

they are dangerous
some were lit at a wedding party we wentand one didn't take off properly, came down on a friend of mine and burnt through his clothes to his skin, which was very painfull as all burns are
also should be banned because they have set hay barns alight and as said before cows sometimes eat them with disasterous results
definite ban needed |

For all the people saying light them so they go out to sea. Don't we already dump enough shit in the seas and oceans?
We were camping a couple of years ago and people in the a joining site though it would be a good idea to send off loads of these lanterns... Trouble was half of them came down in our site... So not a great evening for us on fire watch...
Sorry but they should be banned... |

One came down from neighbouring village and set fire to a stables in our village.
One horse died and several were traumatised. The owner of the stables hates them and suggests they are banned. The horse didn't belong to her and it caused a bit of upset! |
