My husband used to chain smoke (70 odd a day) until 10 years ago, when he stopped. First time he had ever tried to stop, and he hasn't slipped once in 10 years. He said it was surprisingly easy, but then, he WANTED to stop. Not because he felt he ought to, but because he really wanted to stop, for himself. I think that is the secret. He used no aids at all. |

I'm on day 2 I'm using motives electronic things.
I haven't told anyone so I won't feel under any pressure, need to do it now as all winter I've had bad chest and just can't afford to smoke anymore.

I've never been a smoker, so this idea isn't from personal experience, but I liked the thinking behind it.
Years ago I knew a pub manager who smoked only after 10pm at night. This was back when smoking was still permitted in pubs. I asked why he only smoked so late. He explained that he used to smoke all day, from the moment he woke up.
He decided on a step-by-step approach. It began with him no longer lighting up whilst still in bed. He wouldn't allow himself his first until 8am.
Once he'd got comfortable with that he gave himself a new starting time for the first ciggie of the day at 10am. Later he pushed that back to midday. And so on, in increments of two hours.
So he was still a smoker when I met him, but had drastically reduced the daily number by what seems to me like a more realistic method. I'd perhaps liken it to dieting, or taking up an exercise. Rather than going from being a regular smoker to immediately stopping perhaps the gradual approach is easier?
I hope you find the right solution for you, I commend anyone looking to giving up.

In exactly the same situation as you. I'm gonna try the NHS quit smoking stuff. It cant do any harm |

I'm on 4 weeks today. I didn't want to give up bit had to for financial reasons. I got patches. Got an ecig. And made sure I had loads of sweets. Also downloaded the smokefree app for my fone. Simple but effective.
I have been lucky. I used patches for first 2 days. ecig for 3 weeks and now I'm not bothering. And barely ate any sweets.
But my motivation was affording a holiday next week and not having my daughter grown up with a smoking parent. Worked for me x |

I am non-smoker, never smoked but I had a partner who did and she tried almost everything to try and stop. At times she went for weeks, but her biggest weakness was her environment….. almost everybody she knew, smoked, friends, family, colleagues so no matter how hard she tried, cigarettes were always around her - so from an outsider looking in, i do sympathise for smokers trying to quit, because it will never be easy. As far as I know, to this day, she is still smoking….. like everyone around her. |

I'v given up 5 years now from 30-40 a day. I used patches and a plastic ciggy for something to play with. Think you have to want to stop though or you'll find any excuse to start again. Good luck |
