"£10b? Are you sure?"

Yes, it's $19bn. Stupid money but great for the 50 staff who all get a share.

I guess it will soon be full of pop up adverts, there will be charges for sending messages and the content of every message sent will be sold to some Nigerian spamer.

It is that much my calculator can't work out how much per employee! But it must be some sort of record.

"I thought it was 19b

it was 19b but in dollars, think the conversion to sterling brings it down to about 13b. still a ridiculous amount of money for nothing more than a massanger service.

Considering i hate facebook now and dont really leave anything on there thanks to the twat zuckermann selling all people privacy off under the pretence of "social networking" think i may have to abandon whatsapp too now, especially with the pics i send and receive

$19b is what I'd heard reported. That's more than £10b, hence the question.

I always just sort of halve sterling/dollar numbers.

Foreign exchange was never my strong point! I thought it was $16bn but what is $3bn between friends

Assuming it was divided equally between the 50 staff (it won't of course), I have just cost them about £30m each, poor little loves won't be able to survive!! But assuming they have all become millionaires today, if you were one of them, what would be the first thing you would buy?

$4bn cash between 50 folk is 60,000,000 or $60m per employee. Then $15,000,000,000 in shares between them.... Crazy.

A good App until Zuckenberg bought it. I guess he was getting nervous at the thought of a company such as this threatening Facebook. Facebook is becoming another Microsoft - they simply buy up the competition. I still cannot work out what Facebook is about and why so many people are obsessed about publicising their private lives and personal data...

The difference with a site like this and FB is this is normally only a little information and not real names/ real workplaces/ pics of your kids and any information that people seem to think it safe to post.

Just goes to show how much value there is to what we write or send by someone out there..... It was a safe place too send messages ect... now who knows??? the bigger the money the more corrupt people seem to be & will sell out a principle for more ££€€¥®$$©©

Doesn't matter how much they get,,, I just can't believe its in billions!!!!!

This why they bought it. The revenue to gain from the users is massive. They are unlikely to chamge pricing model. But the news reckons that this service sends double the amount of nor.am sms messages now. So it is very.popular.

there's other apps like kik though I've never tried them.I'm sure they could easily develop their own apps but watsapp is ready made so no advertising(which is costly)will be needed.

Absolutely. I wouldn't trust Facebook not to use it for data mining for profit or to compromise the privacy of the users for profit.

The original deveopers could have done that too, of course, but I'd suspect Facebook to be far more likely to, based on the way they run the site.

It's worth the money for 3 reasons,

1 it's off the computer and onto phones

2 many users would have said YES to allowing access to users contacts (phone and email)

3 by fixing such a high price on it, it re-enforces facebooks high valuation.

This (although we dont know the creators of whatsapp were already doing this this) is one of the reasons why i hate Facebook. Im not a happy bunny at this news and i guess i wont be using it for long.

Everything Zuckerberg touches turns to shit, Facebook and his buying and screwing around with Instagram, wont be long till Whatsapp joins them.

I shall stick to being cranky and anti-social so I don't need a messenger.

I have unlimited texts on my 'phone plan anyway and rarely message anyone outside the UK.
