"Is it another word for self-awareness, or a strange, indefinable something that we will never be able to put our fingers on?"
I would describe soul as consisting of mind, will and emotion, and spirit as something separate, in addition. |

It's the one thing which seperates us from every other living thing .
It is a unique entity to each and every one of us .
For most of us it's what drives us to do no wrong .
It's where emotion stems from .
And I guess it's the thing we have that comes back if reincarnation happens .

"Lol shaman
If you came back as a slug , you better hope so :-
How about a lion then? "
Wish I knew how it all works , or even if it's a realistic possibility .
But I would guess it's not possible for a human soul to end up in anything other than a human .

Hinduism and Buddhism view reincarnation differently. In neither case is the concept confined to humans. Hinduism has an eternalist view and a soul type concept whereas Buddhism sees it as levels of consciousness. My understanding is it applies to all sentient life.
Soul concepts in monotheistic religions don't include reincarnation as far as I know but share the view that it is the eternal part of the Self.
I think there are views in Hinduism and Buddhism that consciousness may travel in either direction. But I'm not sure it's quite a long time since I studied this stuff...I've forgotten more than I knew |

"No such thing, we come from nothing and return to nothing.
An empty void for all eternity "
It may be purely a fantasy projection of the unconscious or of the emotions, but it exists as an idea nonetheless.
