English Parliament

Here's something that should cause a reasonable discussion on here lol

Should England get it's own parliament?

I'm against independence, but I do think that there should be more powers devolved to Holyrood, and the welsh and N.I. equivalents.

However, I never understood why when the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish parliaments were first set up, England didn't get one either?

It was left with Westminster, which is the UK parliament, not the English parliament.

The "West Lothian question" refers to Scottish MP's voting on English issues, but that seems quite justified when they are members of Westminster and therefore quite entitled to do so.

Wouldn't it be easier to have a system like America, where each country (Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland) each has their own parliament to decide on issues like healthcare, education, housing etc fir their own respective country, leaving Westminster to deal with issues like international relations and defence?

Just a thought

An English Assembly, just like the Scottish, Welsh or N.I. Assemblies is nothing more than a crock of shit aimed to give another load of political leaches a free ride on all of our backs while dividing us! We are stronger together and the only people who benefit from dividing us are the very people we should be uniting against. The real sad thing is for the most part we are all so intent in getting one over our neighbors that we fail to notice that we are all diminished and loose out by this attitude.

I'm not surprised your against independence OP! Not sure on housing, but I can't see an independent Scotland sustaining free education and prescriptions.

But no, in answer to your question I don't want some Mickey Mouse second tier government for England. It's complicated enough as it is and if it's likely to produce a wee version of Alex Salmond - thanks but no thanks.

Somewhere in North Norfolk

I don't think MPs for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland should be allowed to vote on English matters.

How that should be managed I have no idea.

English MPs have no say in Scotland's parliament.

In that case why allow Manchester MP's to vote on London matters? or Stockport Mp's vote on Rochdale matters? or Surrey MP's to vote on Essex issues? It's all down to how far you take devolution.

English MP's do not vote on Scottish or Welsh issues, they vote on UK ones. The anomaly is that Scottish, Welsh, and NI Mp's vote on some issues that through devolution do not affect their own constituency's. Because England doesn't have its own parliament/assembly everything passed at Westminster affects England. That is not the case for Scotland, Wales, and NI. Why should Scottish MP's be able to vote on say prescription charges or university fees knowing that whatever the result it wont affect their constituents one jot?

That folks is what is known as the "West Lothian Question" and it has never been answered.

I'm all for total independence for England, Wales, Scotland and NI. That answers the West Lothian Question.

OP correct though, there should be devolved areas in England. Not Just London.

That's why I think England should have been dissolved a parliament as well.

Westminster is the British parliament, so anyone elected there should be free to vote on anything presented there. Therefore if issues specific to England were presented at Westminster, then MP's from all 4 countries should be entitled to vote.

I need to do a bit of research on something related to this that I want to post about. I hate posting wrong facts lol
