Second test in Bahrain, Red Bull doing well this test. They've managed a whole 14 laps today
Force India fastest car on track today, a good sign for the Mercedes powered cars. |

Mercedes powered cars will be the better ones I think for the first part of the season, it will be interesting to see how long the engines last during a race though |

Could be worrying for Mclaren, Honda might struggle with missing this year, unless they spend this year testing.
All the Renault powered teams seem to be struggling. |

I think Honda will be getting a lot of information from Mclaren over the course of the season, I'm pretty sure they'll turn up with a reliable and competitive engine. |

Oh yeah, I know what you're talking about, haven't seen it yet but will do when I get chance. Have heard it is good, films about sports seem to struggle most of the time so hopefully the reviews are right. |

I don't think Mercedes would be very happy with that. Not sure Mclaren would want to risk passing on secret info after the Ferrari saga either. They'll more than likely have a Mercedes employee looking very closely over their shoulder all season. |

I know what you mean but I think there will be plenty of information that they can pass on without breaking any rules. Things like power and torque figures all get published with the homoligation process anyway. Sharing of information happens all the time with personnel changes, the mclaren/Ferrari things was more like industrial espionage than people taking secrets with them when they changed teams. |

The most interesting new aspect is the limitation to 100kg of fuel as its going to make some of the drivers slow a little and the reliabilities of the blown V6's will also be a big factor. I think we will have a fair few blown engines this season. |

Rush is not a good film.....it's an outstanding one.
Red Bull are really struggling again this test, which makes me hopeful that this season won't be another procession led by 'Ze German'. |

I'm hoping the Williams revival isn't another false dawn.
lotus may struggle initially until the squad future and finances are sorted out.
Mercedes are in the prime seat. Works development, two very good drivers and strong management team.
Ferrari are too conservative and may struggle for pace.
this may all change after this test. I may be wrong..... I usually am |

True but once sorted the implications for road cars will be huge. 200bhp 1 litre cars doing 65 miles to the gallon. |

Koenigsegg have already done that, they have a normally aspirated, 3-cylinder 1.2ltr engine that produces over 300bhp. Apparently no mainstream car maker is interested in the technology. |

Probably because the first half a dozen people to buy them would kill themselves and they don't fancy the law suits! |

I'd be happy to see interesting racing, overtaking and excitement. Not a procession of cars just trundling round as has been seen a few times in the past couple if seasons.
Oh, and British success of course. That'd be ace. |

Perhaps the fuel companies are too influential? |

Taking any hybrid drive and engine inefficiency out of the equation, don't you have to burn x amount of petrol to produce y amount of horsepower? If we all started blasting around in 300 bhp cars the oil companies would love it.
As someone else said it would be nice to see Williams make some upward progress through the rankings. I'd forgotten Massa is there. |

Not really the case. Powerful engines can be efficient. Much depends on the airflow (getting it in and out as quickly as possible). Then the components need to be light and as friction free as possible which means high quality oils will be required. It will also mean going back to rear wheel drive as much over 220bhp in a front drive car is a waste of power and dangerous. You also have to consider the fact most people don't need 300+bhp for their daily commute so the market will be a small one. |

Increasing the compression with a turbo will increase the power from the same amount of fuel. If 300 BHP is not wanted just make a smaller engine. |

Yes, that's obvious, but not really what we were talking about. Another drawback of turbocharging an engine is heat, they make LOTS of it. Warm/hot air is less dense than cold air so an efficient intercooler is vital. Further gains can be had from water injection to help cool the boost gasses. But when you start getting into that kinda thing it gets very complex and expensive, which is probably why such engines won't be on the road in the near future... |
