Stop thinking about sugar and the cravings will be easier to handle. It may not help being here. Both C words are used a lot.

I kicked mine quite quickly, but I did eat a lot of clementines in the first week or so which probably helped. Every time I wanted to nibble I had a clem.

Though I haven't completely kicked the habit, the one thing I won't give up is squash. I drink high juice with no added sugar and have it very weak but that's my Rubicon.

Fresh is better than dried as the sugar gets concentrated by the drying.

"Topsy!!! Heeeeeellllllpppppppp!"

It may be too late but eat something fatty. If you really want a sweet hit, mix together cream cheese, cream and a bit of lemon juice and sweetener until it's like the top of a cheesecake and eat straight off the spoon.

Or equal quantities peanut butter and butter, blended together. Add a little sweetener if you need it.

Google 'fat bombs'.

Thank you for the suggestions. The cheesecake thingy sounds nice.

I'll see if I'm still wanting something sweet tomorrow and if I am, I can have it. (I know the craving will have passed by tomorrow).

Perhaps I'll go and browse lingerie sites and look at some of the beautiful things I can wear soon.

Try some Atkins bars - very low carb, like 1g, but satisfy the craving - win win. I couldn't manage without them, I need a permanent low carb regime.

In practice it's almost impossible to eliminate carbs entirely, I still eat plenty of veg for instance, but your body can use lipids very efficiently anyway, and indeed even excess protein can be utilised as an energy source.

It works for me. If I get a craving for sugar it won't go away and I'll obsess, 1 little teaspoon is all it takes to kill it. Moderation in everything is the key.

That's because they are little bags of genetically inbred fructose and fructose is metabolised by the liver into triglycerides.

Craving gone

Vanilla shake, a black coffee and distracting myself for an hour has sorted it.

SteelHeels, after 3 days I would think you should be in ketosis. It does take a little while for your body to get used to using ketones as fuel though. The first couple of weeks are generally difficult and it gets much easier after that.

Pops, on a low carb diet the body switches to an alternative metabolic pathway called ketosis. Fat is broken down to create ketones which are used for fuel.

My body runs really well on ketones. I feel great and have loads of energy after the first couple of weeks. My mood is also more stable and generally better. There are few negatives. One is I feel the cold much more.

It's possible to live long term on minimal carbs.

Do you know what after reading this thread I'm really glad I'm not on any diet. I refuse to deprive myself of any food I like I just have a smaller bit. Think I'm most intrigued by the not eating fruit costs full of sugar. Bollocks I'm still eating everything I like in smaller portions without any cravings and losing weight and in fact am eating far more than I would normally and feeling great on it.

That's brilliant Moody and I'm glad it's working for you.

Sadly, for most humans, carbs are causing many long term health disasters.

Believe me, if I could eat bread, potatoes and pasta, I would but they play havoc with my blood sugars, make me fat and give me very bad blood lipids so I simply can't eat them any more. Just like someone with celiac's can't eat wheat.

If that works for you, brilliant I can't have just a little sugar though. It leads to a full out binge. It's all or nothing.

It's like an alcoholic not being able to have just one drink.

If I don't address it, I am highly at risk of developing diabetes. If cutting carbs is what it takes to prevent that, it's a no-brainer as far as I am concerned.

Different people have different plans that work for them and in an ideal world I would agree with ancient Paracelsius to eat a little bit of many different foods.

Unfortunately, due to the added sugars in just about everything these days people get fat, not just here but everywhere. The sugar lobby has been successful in pointing the finger at the nasty fat industry.

Bottom line is, if near enough a normal weight people should/ could eat whatever they like as long as they dont gain weight. If someebody has a lot of weight to lose the ketogenic diet is one of the best. There is a lot of information out there.

That's got a huge amount of sugar in it and for those of us on a ketogenic diet would bring us out of ketosis and cause more craving.

Most fruit is so bastardised, it's all sugar. I don't eat fruit, apart from a few berries in summer.

Just so people know where I'm coming from, I've been doing this for almost seven years. My HbA1c is 4.6 my blood lipids are more that perfect and I'm eight stones lighter. I maintain this by eating saturated fat, protein, dairy and vegetables and my diet is full, varied and incredibly tasty.

Whereas before I would crave and obsess over food and over eat, now I look at fake cake and feel smug.

Believe me, if I could eat bread, potatoes and pasta, I would but they play havoc with my blood sugars, make me fat and give me very bad blood lipids so I simply can't eat them any more. Just like someone with celiac's can't eat wheat.

An actual medical condition I can understand the need not to eat certain things but just to lose weight now to me seems just daft because the more you go without the more you want. A little of what you fancy does you good is what I stick to now. "

In my case I cannot do moderation when it comes to sugar. I behave exactly like an addict. It's not a will-power thing because cutting it out almost completely is a hundred times easier than eating a little and stopping.

One biscuit and I'll be driving to Tescos to buy up as much crap as I can squeeze into a trolley.

You are clearly different but please trust me when I say that your way will not work for me.

How many grams of carbs are you eating in total each day?

"Do you know what after reading this thread I'm really glad I'm not on any diet.

You and I (and many millions more) behave in exactly this way.

Total avoidance is the only way.

If I could restrict myself to just one biscuit, I would never have been so overweight in the first place.

I do trust you , everyone is different and for me I could not or should I say don't want to go without food I enjoy and while I can do that I will. I have started to eat things I make from scratch so I know what's in them and I'm really enjoying finding out I can cook. Whatever works is the way forward for anyone.

I agree. If I could manage without giving up food I enjoy, I would.

It's a choice between the food or my health though. It's that simple.

I don't want diabetes. I don't want diabetes more than I do want a doughnut.

Ultimately I'll find alternatives for the foods I enjoy. And forget about the ones I think I enjoy but am actually hooked on.

Google xylitol, I have just cleared my cupboards of sugar, using this now, HB used it this morning said it was the same as sugar, sugar has too many links to cancer, my bf just got diagnosed with cancer, her oncologist told her to avoid sugar, it feeds the cancer cells.

Xylitol has its own problems but it's not just sugar. Potatoes, bread, pasta, rice are all sugar too.

Also, we are not doing ourselves a favour by switching to skimmed milk - fat free/ low fat does not mean healthier.

I like the statement that the desire for not having diabetes is greater than the desire for a donut.

Not really. No carbs in chicken

BBs eat low carb to drop body fat when cutting.

Lift, eat lots of protein to get big. Then cut. Massive over-simplification but that's basically it.

I'm on about 45g. After the first week or two I can go up to around 80g and stay in ketosis without having to increase my level of activity. That's as an occasional thing though, I didn't try it every day.

You lucky bitches!

Just to stay in ketosis I have to stay under around 20-30g a day.

Possibly because you are at ideal weight? I can have around 50 a day and stay in ketosis.

Not quite. I am still losing but it's painfully slow. It's probably my fucked metabolism or and interesting theory I'm researching about the type of fat that was stored when I was obese.

Sounds plausible. I'm 4, maybe 5 stones heavier than ideal. The net carbs I can eat and maintain ketosis may well drop as I lose the weight.

I've not decided what I intend to do when I reach my target yet. I'm not sure if I'll aim to stay in ketosis or not.
