I didn't want to intrude on the thread that this was originally raised on but it was mentioned that some charities concerned with premature babies welcome hand knitted or crocheted hats for them. I've been off work sick today (looking stunning in a mans hoody, casual trousers and slippers) so downloaded a pattern and crocheted a hat....it's huge! Can anyone recommend a pattern I can download that will actually fit a premature babies head not encase their whole little body please?

What about the charities that want the hats? Maybe they have patterns to follow.

Would it not be easier to cut the ends of woolly socks? Get two that way.

It would be easier but a lot more expensive, also if it was my baby I would like to think of him or her wearing a hat as opposed to the end of a sock, but if it was a choice between that and nothing I'd be happy with a sock

Did you use the same size hook and thread as in the pattern? I made a hat not realising is used chunky wool instead of double knit and with a 5mm hook instead of a 4 and it fit me instead of my 6 month old niece!! Lol x

now there's a thing...its an American pattern and said light or medium yarn, so I guessed and used some double knit I had. This could be where I've gone wrong

Near Edinburgh..

well done to everyone who donates to such - Dare I say - unusual Causes..

But our daughter was born 3 months early and weighed in at less than a bag of sugar !! and although stuck in a temperature controlled incubator - she still needed These " Hats "..

Twenty years later she is still alive and we Thank-You all..

Sad to think that we need to donate such a small thing to help - but - even the incubator was donated by a charity !!

glad to hear she's thriving, my brother was premature 47 years ago and he is as strong as an ox, my dad used to come home from the hospital and pinch his thumb and forefinger together and say that his bum was that big

Tell me, did you mind what colour the hats were or if they had any embellishments e.g. a little flower or such?

Have a premature grandson in an incubator at the moment and the nurses found the smallest hat they could but it was still massive on him so i went to the charity shop and bought some dolls knitted hats for him that fit fine until he gets a bit bigger xx
