That's quite a deep question. Can you imagine life without out it these days? Do you watch much tv? I never watch it anymore, I stream everything I want to watch. I bet there are members here who can't remember life before mobiles, internet and facebook.

I'd swap the internet filters, if you use them, swap the router for one that's known to work, and do all of this at the terminal point where it enters your home. That's if the ISP hasn't confirmed that it's definitely their fault. They may not be the quickest anyway, once it's cleared, to inform you of this, so a regular check could be very handy.
I always incrementally replace equipment, to ensure that it's not a device fault. Obviously I'd check from more than one pc, wifi phone etc too, if the equipment checks out ok.
Otherwise, have you a neighbour nearby who could let you use theirs? Even if it was a loooooong dangling wire, round the back of the house, it could work, albet with a degraded speed and line quality.
After that, I'd be complaining to the ISP, and ensuring they know you want to cancel. I'd look at a pay as you go dongle, which come with sim cards, which are priced for internet access on short term use. It'll plug into a pc, and work if there is mobile signal in your area.
