"I wouldn't use the term "Pansexual" as it seems to express a generally equal approach in all directions. I limit myself to "Bisexual" because I enjoy sex with either men or with women (preferably not both at once!), but I only form romantic attachments with other women, not men. It isn't a singular continuum - sexual and emotional/romantic inclinations can be quite different. " I can see that.
"The Angel Haze inter_iew on Woman's Hour last week has spawned a further discussion about pansexuality. Is this a term you would use, rather than bisexual? Do you think this is more inclusive, more fluid, more you?" Miley Cyrus has come out this week as pansexual.

I'd forgotten about this thread.

"I think in general women are a lot more likely to be flexible/fluid with sexuality than men are. Quite a few women are at least bi-curious whereas most men identify as either straight or gay." Is that because it's more of a fantasy for men to have sex with bi women and that makes it acceptable? Yet I can still get men trying to be abusive by hurling the accusation of lesbian at me.

"I think in general women are a lot more likely to be flexible/fluid with sexuality than men are. Quite a few women are at least bi-curious whereas most men identify as either straight or gay." Don't think this is true. It's socially acceptable (and frequently fashionable) for women to be bi. Many men are more sexually fluid than they'd choose to admit publicly. I have numerous bi male friends who are in the closet for fear of not being accepted. It's society, media and the opinions of peers forces them to choose one or the other Original question, I've always considered myself queer but also identify as pansexual. I like people. What between their legs is neither here nor there. If it takes a pop muppet to make non binary sexuality more acceptable, then that can only be a good thing. Let people shag who they want

Lesbian acts was never illegal here in the UK. Men still feel awkward about being honest about their sexuality judging by the number of 'straight' profiles that message to say their bi. To answer the OP no wouldn't say I am as don't think I could have a relationship with another man so will stick with bisexual

"I think the language used for these conversations needs to change a bit as it's quite limiting. I'm sexually attracted to men and women, so bisexual, but only romantically interested in men, so what's that? Heterophile? I'm also gender fluid. I don't think the term pansexual really achieves what it's attempting to achieve." This for me too..

To answer the OP no wouldn't say I am as don't think I could have a relationship with another man so will stick with bisexual" Pansexual no more means that you'd have a relationship with another man than bisexual does. You could but it's not a given. Pansexual is like bisexual but whereas bisexual refers to an interest in men and women, (the bi- prefix meaning two genders), pansexual recognises that some people don't fit neatly into the male or female box, in terms of their gender identity. If you are attracted to men and women, you're bisexual. If you can be attracted to people with gender identities other than purely male or female, you could be said to be pansexual. It doesn't mean you have to be happy to have a romantic relationship with men/women/other gender identities. It doesn't mean you have to be attracted to all men/women/people with other gender identities. The term means exactly the same as bisexual except it recognises that gender isn't necessarily binary, (i.e. it isn't just purely male or purely female), and that some people can be attracted to others regardless of their gender identity.

I don't think the term pansexual really achieves what it's attempting to achieve." I think people sometimes just want to understand themselves. A label they can use that helps them 'fit in/ belong' more, helps. When I first realised I wasn't straight I needed to know what I was, what I could describe myself as- even if only as my internal label. I got comfortable with that and now I don't need a label the same. Everyone is different of course.... Even if there was 1,000 different labels they wouldn't fit everyone. I don't see the harm in it though. I don't think it's trying to achieve anything as such. People who need a 'label'/ identity can use it. Those that are happy without labels can still be happy.

I don't think the term pansexual really achieves what it's attempting to achieve." It does but it's misunderstood, which is what causes the confusion. Bisexual means you are sexually attracted to both men and women. Whether you'd have a romantic relationship with them doesn't come into it. If you identify as gender fluid, that makes those that are sexually attracted to you more than bisexual, since you don't identify as one of the binary genders. That's where pansexual comes in. It signifies someone can be attracted to people without much caring what their gender identity is or which bits they have.

"I'm not bothered if someone is male, female, trangender, intersex, gender queer, or any other identity you can think of. If I find them attractive, I find them attractive. Straight: sexually attracted to the opposite sex. Bisexual: sexually attracted to men and women. Pansexual: sexually attracted to anyone they're sexually attracted to, regardless of gender identity or sexual organs." I guess that makes me pansexual then...

"It does make sense once the distinction between sexual and romantic attraction is made, but it rarely is in general discourse. " We label the sexual and romantic in the same way. I have a friend who was very prominent in his field. When he married a woman there was a bit of a hue and cry as he had only ever had gay relationships. He was gay. He fell in love with a woman and they have had over 20 years of a happy marriage.

"I think there's a place for a term that includes not only men and women but also everything inbetween i.e. TV's TG's etc. I can imagine there are bisexuals that wouldn't be interested in TV's or TG's for example... so pansexual does infer an even broader sexual appetite imo" Would that include children, animals, dead people, strange objects? Or is there a limit to this 'pan' that people claim to be?

" You still haven't answered my question. Yes 'sexual' would be ideal but homo, bi or het don't sit right with me. When having sex with a a tgirl/TS, girl and a man, what am I? Besides busy, how would you define my sexuality?

" You meet one woman who sounds like a slightly bonkers fantasist the whole world has gone mad? " She was young and impressionable and gathered all her knowledge/or lack of from websites like I've mentioned. I said the the world has gone mad because this Feminism 3.0 propaganda is out there making people like her believe that 25% of all men are rapists...wtf There was a loon on Irish radio today promoting her book on Rape Culture today. Cashing in on a trend and scaremongering while she's at it. Everybody knows that rape is abhorrent, there is no such culture justifying here in the western world, it's just a load of crazy bloggers on a mission to make mountains out of molehills.
" Is that because it's more of a fantasy for men to have sex with bi women and that makes it acceptable? Yet I can still get men trying to be abusive by hurling the accusation of lesbian at me. No just an observation in general. It just seems that men generally identify strongly one way or the other whereas a greater proportion of women identify as having an attraction to both men and women. There's probably some deep psychological or evolutionary theory/reasoning out there... And those men are prob just jealous idiots because you chose not to sleep with them." I don't agree at all, I believe the acceptance of bi women by men is because of the fantasy.. me don't just see two women having sex they see the eroticism of having both women playing/having sex not only with each other but with him. He does not see the eroticism of the exact opposite senario being him having sex with another man while his wife enjoys being the person all this activity centres around. Also men are or have been certainly in my lifetime brought up detest homosexuality. Being gay is not only sick but something not natural. Luckily with a more enlightened society the stigma is going but still has a long long way to go. That is why in my opinion bi sexuality it is more acceptable in women. Even on here the men state 80% of the time they are straight and are 100% not into men but how many in a meet will deliberately brush your manhood or frequently actually turn and ask if they can play with you. Also ask the tv's on here how many straight guys ask for a meet! My opinion only.

" Gender is far, far more complex than male or female. Even biological sex is more complex than simply male or female. Sometimes I think life is only as complicated as people choose to make it. Mr ddc" That may be true, to an extent, but if someone else tells me that they don't fit into the binary idea of gender, who am I to argue with them and tell them they're wrong? I think it's wonderful that we, in this country at least, have the freedom to express our sexuality and gender.

Who am I to say they are wrong?" Physically they don't but psychology they do which is the point here is that sexuality is more than just what physical gender your born into. There are so many different variables when you consider physical, psychological and emotional sexuality and hetro, bi and homo prefixes don't seem to cover every variable. Pansexual does seem to be a one size fits all bracket to some degree if my understanding of it is correct.
"It doesn't sound right. If there was a 3rd of 4 sex then yes it would sound a bit better. There is. Intersex. My arse Another made up name Er, all words are made up. Intersex is a perfectly legitimate way of describing physical sex. Feel free to look it up if you don't understand it. How exactly would you define people born with both male and female sexual organs in your "there are only two sexes" claim? You really are showing your ignorance of this subject. Hermaphrodite. And they usually choose which gender feels right for them and who they then choose to have sex with would determine whether they are heterosexual, bisexual or homosexual. Still only 2 genders. I didn't say gender. I said sex. Intersex describes physical sex, not gender. They aren't the same. There are more than 2 sexes and more than 2 genders. Sorry, meant to say only 2 sexes. There are only 2 sexes Oh dear. There's such a wealth of information available at our fingertips these days and yet some choose to not only be ill-informed but to shout about it." The people who try to educate themselves from the internet are usually the least well informed. And therein lies the problem with all these stupid names and terms. And as you may have read earlier a lot of my 'peers' agree or consider pansexual to be so ridiculous that they relate it to fucking people from a J M Barry novel or kitchen utensils

And you couldn't be less well informed if you tried, so I don't think you have any worries about doing some reading. The information is there if you choose to look. In the meantime, happy trolling.

"Sexual behaviour between genders is adequately covered by Heterosexual, homosexual and bisexual behaviour. There absolutely no reason to invent nonsense names for people to hide behind...... By this rationale, what am I? I like femininity, masculinity and everything inbetween. Women, men, TV, TS, gender queer, gender fluid blabla. I like people. Humans. When in a LTR with a woman, I'm told I'm gay which for me is complete bollocks. I like Pan and queer as they simply open it up to mean all, other. Simplified Sexuality,,,,! Heterosexual.... Someone who only engages in sexual behaviour with persons of the opposite gender. Bisexual .... Someone who engages in sexual behaviour with persons of their own gender and persons of the opposite gender. Homosexual.... Someone who only engages in sexual behaviour with persons of their own gender. Take away all the guff about one-off encounters and experimentation and anyone can easily identify their sexuality from the above list,,,, Everything else is just utter bollix spouted by people trying to make themselves sound interesting..... Surprised a tv would say this as have known a few tv's who would probably disagree with this seeing that wouldn't have sex with another man without being dressed and likewise wouldn't sleep with a woman while dressed. Likewise known men that wouldn't go anywhere near another man unless that man was dressed but then are happy to play with their cock. At least pansexual takes that into account but thats the thing with labels it's just a way for trying to make sense of things that some times make no sense at all. You just have to see the arguements in the transgender world in regards to cd's, tv's and ts's to know that Clothes don't change anyone's gender,,,, Transsexuals/Trangender use a gender specific which best describes their real identity..... They do not crossdressers..... People who crossdress do not change gender when swapping clothes.... Sexual activity and gender identity are not related when determining sexuality.... Think I know what you're trying to say but could you give a variable where hetero bi or gay doesn't fit?

And as you may have read earlier a lot of my 'peers' agree or consider pansexual to be so ridiculous that they relate it to fucking people from a J M Barry novel or kitchen utensils" This! Either websites or books by pop psychologists/social scientists cashing in on a trend. More labels = more opportunities to be offended when the wrong label is used

"Crewe24u save quoting all the above text. I'm refering to gender fluid people here who although not physically at least mental switch their genders. If someone is male but identifying as female has a relationship sexual or otherwise with with another man do we count the physical or psychological gender to determine their sexuality? If only physical then isnt that putting shackles on them to try and say what they are or can we evolve beyond what bits we're given and count their psychological gender?" The physical. It would either mean he is homosexual os bisexual. We are mot putting shackles on him. In his mind he is free to be who he wants

I'm quite shocked to see such an ignorant _iew on a site like this. There are numerous shades of both gender and sexuality. Do you actually know any gender variant people, have read anything about it or just spouting off what you know from a hetero normative stance so therefore it must be correct?
| |||
"Merkin..your response is text book internet feminist. Exhibit A: "wow"....in response to anything you don't like. As if disagreeing _iew is really that shocking Exhibit B: "heteronormative" - what does that even mean?????? So on, so forth Where did all this new language come from? What books or websites have you been reading?" It's called evolution, moving forward. Are we supposed to accept identities as forced upon us by years of patriarchal (yep another big word for you there) nonsense? Humans evolve, we change and educate. Yes academia can get in the way and confuses things but if it means that people have the freedom to be and identify however they want without ignorance, then it's a good thing. And please stop messaging me privately.

"Has evolution accelerated in the past couple of years? I wonder how a biologist would _iew your arguments. "
"So we have evolved as species to now have a multitude of genders? And you call it (social) science? Has evolution accelerated in the past couple of years? I wonder how a biologist would _iew your arguments. I private messaged you by accident. " Twice Evolution of ideas, acceptance. Gender isn't a new thing invented by western academics. Gender variant people have existed all over the world since we crawled out of caves. Thailand recognises the third sex. In India, Hijra were once highly revered etc Gender fluid or those who don't wish to be in two boring binary boxes have always been here and always will be.
"What are your thoughts on gender based pronouns? See my post above..." Find some of it a bit silly but tend to ask someone how they choose to be referred.
| |||
"Yes twice both genuine accidents, sorry We agree that this stuff has been around forever so why are you and your ilk over intellectualising it? Do the transexuals in thailand not self identify as women for the most part? Like it or not gender is a biological concept, based on one's anatomy and sexual preference is just that, preference and personal. What about my question on gender pronouns? Will we need to an if/then flowchart to know how refer to people in the future?" My ilk? You know frig all about me dear. I've spoken on panels (nationally and overseas) on the subject and gotten into many a row with academics and feminists about it so don't shove me in a group of people you've clearly written off as the enemy. Some of their ideas are valid, some not. To accept things as they are and not move forward in ideas and terminology is a very Daily Mail, small minded stance. I chose not to intellectualise, just happen to be friends with, work with and play with a lot of people of various identities. All humans have the right to identify how they chose, fuck who they want to and be who they want. Some people like labels, they want to compartmentalise things. If they want to, let them.

"Shall we just say that if you wish to call yourself homosexual, bisexual, hetrosexual, pansexual or any other type of sexual that is up to you. At the end of the day it is upto the individual to decide which box fits them and not anyone else? If it makes them then who are we to argue???" meant to say makes them happy

In my ignorant opinion of course
