you drink directly from the Thames??!! i dont think so.!!Potable Water comes from a treatment work and is tested before it goes out into your tap via the sealed mains system.QED its safe to drink!

I thought that the only treatment plant in danger was Kenley and that there was a major operation in place to make sure the water there doesn't get contaminated? |

There hasn't been an advisory in London. The only advice has been the usual for people in flooded water which is to keep your hands clean and do not eat any food that has been in contact with flood water. It also makes sense to boil water if you have been flooded.

Im shocked at how many dont drink tap water. Bottled water is the next biggest con after our utilities that were sold at 'market rates' for the benefit of the country. You can filter your own tap water at a fraction of the cost of bottled. And you will not be ingesting the plasticisers from the plastic bottles - you think that stuff is safe!! As for London tap water, it does not taste as good as most northern, but Uk water is very safe. And there appears no justification for the starting of this thread. |

Don't think it is the pipes, as i said in my comment i have tried it in other people's houses and its the same there. Seems some areas of the country have clear tap water and then other areas it is cloudy? I just prefer to stick to bottled water anyway, read a newspaper report years ago about all the chemicals that go into tap water and it put me off drinking it even if its clear. |

I am sure that it was London water that cola was bottling and selling.
The only time tap water is contaminated by flood water is for those who's taps are currently below the indoor water level!
Bottled water has been tested frequently against UK tap water and it contained more bacteria and more contaminants than what you already pay for.
OP must have been drinking the gin bottle by mistake |

If in doubt let it settle and see if it clears.
Use a water filter if you are concerned. You'll soon know if there are particulates in the water then. |

My water comes from underground chalk boreholes and whilst clear, is really hard. It can occasionally be a touch cloudy. However, all the water I drink or boil goes through Britta water jugs if only to make the kettle last longer! |

I used to know a high up in the water quango. She would only ever drink tap water. Londons finest restaurants all knew to have a carafe and let it stand for a a few minutes. Once the bubbles have cleared and the chlorine has evaporated, London tap water is as good as any
And much better than French bottled rubbish
Coca cola tried to launch dasini, (very popular in the states) which was bottled in a plant very close to Peckham and not long after the infamous only fools and horses episode.
They were ridiculed over their "reverse osmosis" process and people refused to pay a premium for glorified normal tap water especially from a plant in Peckham |

Ignorance is expensive.
Water dissolves more air when the temperature is cold.
Water from taps is running fast.
The running and the extra air ( seen as tiny air bubbles ) make the water cloudy.
Water in bottles has been sitting still for a long long long long time. A very long time.
It doesn't look cloudy as it is warm and still and even if it's put in the fridge it can't dissolve more air as it's sealed.
Watch your glass of water when you fill it. Leave it to settle.
Within a minute it is crystal clear as the air left the glass.
There are NO solids in the glass.
The water is clean.
Cleaner than some bottled water in PLASTIC ffs ...... I mean ...plastic ? |

this..
due to it being pumped, main water pipes in most urban areas are running at several bars pressure well above atmospheric pressure hence any break in the system leads to the water being pushed out which if it were to happen in an area of contaminated water would not allow ingress to the system..
any breaks in the system once repaired the advice is always to run a tap to flush through any contamination in the repair process..

London born and bred. I've been drinking tap water for 53 years. I didn't know it was "hard" until I visited my parents when they moved up north in the eighties and tasted the difference.
I've never encountered cloudy water in any home I've lived in/visited so I'll take the comments from people who live in the opposite end of the country about finding cloudy water every time they turn a tap in London with a HUGE pinch of salt! |

I have experienced cloudy tap water but it's definitely not a possibility limited to London or even the South of the country. |

If the water was contaminated the local water company would be delivering potable water in bowsers for consumption.
Even a flooded area's water is unlikely to be contaminated due to the positive pressure on the main, it would only happen if mains pressure has dropped or the depth of the flood water is very deep. If your water pressure is 3 bar it would require any the water main to be under more than 30 metres of flood water for the pressure in the water main to be overcome and the ingress of contaminated water to occur.
