I am Curious about home testing for HIV

no matter

As many of you seem keen on testing often... and some not so keen.

How would you feel to have access to do it yourself HIV test.

I am assuming that people do all the tests and not only the STI ones of course . maybe this isnt the case..

My son has just completed an on line survey about this which caused us to have a discussion on the home test and your feelings there after should you find yourself to be Positive.

Would you prefer to be told or counseled at a clinic or deal with it alone

Do you think it could lead to over testing oneself ? and believing you are safe (or the person trying to say they are safe)

I have a link but imagine i cant put it here

I'm sure that was a question asked on the survey they gave me to complete when I got checked last month.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

There was a discussion about this on the Terrence Higgins Trust website last year.

I would worry about false positive and false negative tests.

Personally, I prefer to get the news from a professional with the support of counselling available.

Not a chance in hell I'd do this.

Medical professionals are there for a reason, there are some things you just don't DIY, anything relating to serious health issues fall under that category.

Bristol East

I got one of those home testing kits.

Thought I'd try it.

Filled out a form on an NHS website and it arrived a few days later.

I found it too fiddly.

Couldn't get enough blood to fill up the vial and abandoned the idea.

Easier to go to the GP or THT.

That's my experience, anyway.

Might work for others, but it didn't for me.

We get a full set of tests every 3 months at the GUM clinic including HIV. In and out in 5 minutes and no stress or hassle - and as has been said - why not leave it to the professionals.

Go to the GUM clinic. They know what they are talking about and will get the diagnosis right. If anyone is infected they will start treatment and councelling straight away.

This was one of the points THT raised with their concerns.

I think there is also another couple of issues.

1. The incidence of chlmydia and gonorrhea is likely to increase with increased bare back sex.

2. The measurement of HIV prevalence will be even more skewed by those who choose not to seek any help even when they know the result.

Its a con to make quick money by private clinics, other clinics have slammed this as not being 100% with lots of false readings.

Go to your local GUM clinic where they will give you a full test which will be accurate.

You need blood, urine (for guys), swaps to get proper results...anything else is Mickey Mouse & not to be trusted.

The land of grey peas and bacon

I sometimes get false positive results have done for years though I've never been complacent enough to assume that it's a negative result so not sure I'd really want to do a test at home..I've not had a false positive in a few years so can only assume that the technology in testing at clinic has progressed...so no I'd like to container gate ting tested in clinics

The kits have been easily available and used in America and other countries for some time. False positives, false negatives and people being incompetent at administering the test has been recorded elsewhere. Yet they appear to be growing in popularity.

I can understand home testing if you are in remote areas but if you have a GUM clinic 5 mins up the road I know which one I'd choose

We've asked a few medics about DIY kits as we like to be checked and most have said to avoid them.

I agree. Testing isn't free across the world but it is here and if you haven't got a GUM close to you then you still your GP.

The adult industry here & America don't recognise instant tests as they are too risky & put lives in danger, if they were 100% it would be far easier to use these on set.

If you can't be bothered to take the time sitting in a clinic or doctors then maybe they are better than nothing i suppose.

They don't dish out my condom of choice - but no biggie!! Happy to source my own and just take advantage of the testing facilities, great staff and non-judgemental environment!

And for those that have coughed up to being swingers that haven't had their hep B jabs - don't forget to ask next visit!

I don't get them either as my tests are done as part of my regular blood tests and checks at the hospital and GP.
