"What did she say?
My mum used to make egg curry and rice when we had run out of money.
My current favourite is eggy bread."
Oh god - forgot about eggy bread! Yummy too |

She asked me if i was poor.. to which i replied 'no, why do you ask?' She then came back with 'Because you gave me beans on toast for breakfast and poor people have that'
i at the time found it funny as it did bring back memories of eating that mean when my parents were running out of money towards the month. But in this case i just fancied it for breakfast |

After the initial giggle i did tell her it was nothing to do with that.
Yet it was true when i was growing up, the first few weeks after mum n dads pay day was all yummy foods.. and towards the end it was simple basic store cupboard foods. |

Due to t.v ads etc children think that cereal is healthy. Far from it.
Ounce for Ounce beans contain more protein than steak.
Beans are GOOD food. Cereal is shit ..... expensive shit.
Tell her brain poor people eat sugared up shite. ( Maybe not in those words tho ) |

"After a gem of a comment this morning made by my 4yr old it got me thinking..
What are your fave low costing meals?"
Sometimes I give myself the thumbs up for feeding many with nothing.
Other times I give myself the thumbs up cos something was bloody tasty AND economical.
One of my faves is cottage pie with the base 'boosted' up with a few porridge oats ( not too much or it turns to meat porridge ) if no porridge use bread and bung in an extra stock cube to keep up the flavour.
I once made pancake lasagne cos I had no pasta and no money.
I've made jambalaya which is a rice / sausage dish - great for using up left over veg.
When really poor making a chicken into a feast i.e. soup, dinner and rissoles for the next day.
I used to put about ten slices of thick toast on a baking tray. Cover it in tomatoe and onion base that id made in a pan. Put left over meat and tons of cheese on top and call it pizza ..... it never fooled the kids but there was tons more food and no additives in mum's pizzas.
list is fooking endless....
I hate cheap meals that aren't nutritious - they aren't food. |

Chicken soup, made with the left over carcass...never fails to be delicious.
Anything that goes on toast, close to payday...a poached egg, or cheese, chilli and beans.

Nope.
Birds Eye should be sued over misrepresentation.
Their pic shows lush juicy fish inside a light coated crumb.
I slurp over fish fingers n they are crumb with a razor thin smidge of fish inside.
Waitrose are not any better.
I've removed all the crumb from B.E ones just to see how much fish there is. |

I was happy with the amount of fish to batter in my Waitrose fishfingers. I prefer just to eat fish though and rarely have fishfingers. Mackerel is cheap, tasty and nutritious.

Corned beef hash with sliced potatoes if I've got dumpling mix add those too.
One of my favourite meals is eggy bread which can be done one of two ways. First beaten egg then dipped in or the other way my mam did it was cut a thick slice of an uncut loaf cut a square in the middle place in a frying pan drop egg in. Delicious |

If I have no time and just want to knock up something cheap and cheerful I usually do Citrus Marinated heirloom Maine Lobster with a Ponzu Compote and Vodka Pan-Seared Imported Spinach with a Durian Bavarois. |

Baked potato with sured cream, chopped chives and a tiny little bit of cheese if you are feeling, particularly, well off at the time.
Two pieces of toast around tinned tuna that had been mixed with some chopped onion.
Mashed sardines on toast.
Cheese on toast with Worcestershire sauce.
Banana and cheese sandwich.
Vegetable casserole with dumplings.
Sliced tomato with olive oil and black pepper, in a baguette.
Vegetable casserole with added sausage.
Sausages and fried onions in bread rolls with ketchup and mustard.
Chilli con carne with rice.
Poached eggs on toast.
Omelette +\- cheese, or Spanish
Salad nicoise with potatoes, boiled eggs, tuna and anchovies
Home-made soup
Slow cooked pork or lamb shoulder with vegetables; 6 hours at 140C
Rabbit
Home-made yoghurt
Shepherd's pie with cheesy mash
Stir fried vegetables +/- some chicken, Char-Sui, pork or prawns
Buy dried pulses and beans rather than tinned.
Home-made meat or vegetable burgers
Grow your own herbs; easy.
Keep a couple of chickens, if you have room for a coop; mine is in the hallway, having been delivered yesterday; £75 including deliver from eB.
Aldiss, Lidle and the local large oriental and Indian supermarkets are your friend.
If I can provide a choice of 5 mains for 154 people using organic meat and other quality ingredients for £165, then a main course should be coming in at around £1 or less; you may need to make a bulk cook and freeze or refrigerate but a pot of chilli using 400 g lean steak mince and 400 g cubed steak and some bacon will last me for a week.
Post script; celery makes a good soup base.

What temp and how long for?"
Fry the chicken first for colour and flavour, then 40 minutes at 190C or 180C in a fan assisted oven.
If you're adding vegetables parboil before adding them in.

On an unrelated topic, never accept nuts or sweets from elderly people; they may have sucked the chocolate off the nuts and the sugar coating off the sweets.
I'm off to see Mrs Phillips in Room 7, now.
