Giraffe

Hi,

Did anyone else see the story about the giraffe that was put down at Copenhagen Zoo due to fears of inbreeding?

THe Zoo's Scientific Director is quoted as saying:

1) "giraffes had to be selected to ensure the best genes were passed down to ensure the long-term survival of the species";

2) "Giraffes today breed very well, and when they do you have to choose and make sure the ones you keep are the ones with the best genes";

3) And concerning the Yorkshire Wildlife Park who offered to take the giraffe instead, he said that "any space should be reserved for a genetically more important giraffe."

Two things concern me. One is that if genetic selection is the best way to ensure survival of an animal species, then should we now go into the wild and start dictating which animals can breed in their own natural environments?

And two, are we moving towards a more eugenical (not sure if thats the right word but it sounds good ) society in general, where only those people with good genes should be allowed to have children?

My own thoughts are that we should stay away from eugenics in both humans and animals. It's called natural selection for a reason.

Any other thought?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I saw the story before the giraffe was put down. A zoo here was trying to rescue you the little giraffe when I read the story.

Copenhagen Zoo did say the meat would be used for the lions and tigers. That seems to fulfill the circle of life.

And yet in America they let a white tiger live despite sever genetic deformities.

1/Interbreeding causes all sorts of problems. 2/The lions have to eat something.

It's sick what the zoo did and to do it all in public for people to watch it just wrong, there was other zoos what was willing to take the animal and they just decided to kill it and what makes me laugh is if u look at some the pics there's family's there with there kids allowing them to watch it,if we had kids we certainly wouldn't allow them to watch it

I did see that they allowed people to view the dissection, for scientific purposes, which I would actually have liked to see.

However, there's a difference between dissecting a giraffe which has died of illness or old age, and one that was put down simply because it's genes didn't fit in with the zoo's breeding policy.

"1/Interbreeding causes all sorts of problems. 2/The lions have to eat something."

But why not send or sell the giraffe to one of the zoos which offered to take it, or the private individual who put a bid in?

That would have solved the inbreeding problem by moving it's genes to somewhere else, not by killing it.

The lions survived before the giraffe was put down as well. And they'll survive once it's been digested.

Why not? It was dead before they dis the autopsy. They didn't kill it in front of people.

If you had kids would you let them believe that meat comes from the supermarket?

giraffes wouldnt stand a chance in the serenghetti so to moan about one that was surplus being fed, humanely, to the lions, is pointless.

as has been said, its the circle of life.

genetic breeding has been going on for generations of animals, why would zoos be any different?

its called survival of the fittest, and something that the human race seem to have long since forgotten

Shipping giraffes cost money! You need a big box for a start and it made sense to feed it to the lions and save 3 cows or 12 seep from death.

To be fair on this point, it would have been good educationally to see it. How many people can say that they've watched a giraffe or other large animal being dissected. However, I think if you lived locally in this case, quite a lot, as the report said that the zoo puts down about 20-30 animals a year, for the same reason, genetic uncompatibility.

it may of been dead before but I don't see why they had to skin it and feed it to the lions on public display, they could of easily done this behind closed doors,if we had kids we wouldn't want them to see this at a young age

Because all meat comes vac packed fir convenience

Take a look at the pics and you will see that none or very few of the kids look traumatised. Most are at tthe front watching with enthusiasm. This is another case of adults using the excuse of 'the kids will be traumatized' to deflect from a situation where they themselves are afraid to answer questions they don't know the answer to.

I know ours would have enjoyed it. Not in a mawkish way but because they are interested.

As well as this giraffe being destroyed, longleat destroyed 6 lions recently due to over breeding.

I could understand it more if it was to save a near extinct species but no need to put it down if it could of been rehomed.

It's not just overseas zoos killing healthy animals

Longleat have had 6 lions destroyed, 1 was injured as there was to many males in one enclosure and the other 5 were destroyed due to their blood line!

Do you hide the meat in your fridge from the kids? Do you cross the road to avoid letting your children from seeing in a butcher's window?

Kids need to learn about these things and understand that the food we eat isn't all made in a factory somewhere, how else can they make informed decisions? To shelter them from it will only make matters worse in the future.
