I was forced to pass you with inches to spare because the twat on the other lane of the dual carriageway roundabout ignored my indicator, your presence, the speed limit and other traffic.
My heart was pounding so you must have shit your lovely lycra pants. |

"You see that says to me that you should not have passed the man in Lycra if the person in the outside lane thought that he/she was too close to you to be able to let you out.
"
No, we were just coming off a roundabout, clear visibility, but the driver on the outside ignored what was happening and decided to try to accelerate his way in the gap. The road was clear for me to pass until he decided he wanted to get where he was going and fuck everybody else. |

As a cyclist myself please be careful we dont want to damage your car.if in doubt let us out ..ie give us space its so hard cycling when there are potholes, wind ,cars, lorries, pedestrains, dogs, rain, gear changes, poor brakes, we wobble at lot and many of us arent that fit, so please give us space.
ps some cyclist go over 25mph and that too is an issue as motorists misjudge our speed....give us space please! |

Quite right.
And to those cyclists who like to play victim. The rules are there for you to obey too

As a cyclist I should be outraged by this but the OP is hot and clearly appreciates a lycra clad arse so don't want to risk offending her... So hey ho shit happens and no one was hurt. obviously if a bloke had been driving my response may have been different... |

I imagine someone is sat saying to their OH/ mate....I was driving round a roundabout...... I had just came off it onto the dual carriageway and some woman indicated to pull over , I had nowhere to go so it was either try and outrun her so she could pull over or put my anchors on and cause a possible accident with people behind me coming off the roundabout. |

Just to let you know I am both a cyclist and a driver and I was neither driving illegally or recklessly. My son is also a cyclist, the sort that follows the road laws and was knocked off his bike last year buy a car doing an illegal right turn, and faces many, many years of surgery and pain.
The situation was unsafe because of the other driver, not me. Unless you were a witness to the event, you won't be able to appreciate the situation. |

Maybe, but that's not what happened. |

in my trade I am always driving vehicles which are traveling about the same speed or slightly faster than cyclists ,
lucky us the local council decided to make our area a cycle route , it is now a nightmare , someone is going to get killed , to many teams of cyclists traveling 3 or 4 abreast makes it very dangerous to overtake |

"how do the police book cyclists if they break the speed limits as by us its 20mph now"
They don't. But there are offences that a cylist can be arrested for. But let's not forget speeding motorists present much more of a danger. And few cyclists ride at greater than 20mph anyway and those that do, assuming that the cars surrounding them observe the limit will find it difficult to go faster than flowing traffic. |

"how do the police book cyclists if they break the speed limits as by us its 20mph now"
Its a strange one that. Cycles don't fall under the speeding regs as they are not motorised nor have speedometers fitted. You currently cannot be prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit on a bicycle but there is, however, an old offence of 'furious cycling' that could potentially be applied should the officer actually know about the law in the first place. |

Furious cycling. Brilliant. I cycled to the corner shop this morning and I was rather cross. Would I get a ticket for that ? |

Its great isn't it? Old Victorian-era law, god knows what you actually have to do to be charged with it! |

Ah, seems you have to cause injury to be charged with this offense, rather than just technically be speeding.

I only have to sit on a bicycle and I instantly become furious, this law is probably aimed at me! |

There was a guy nicked around 20 years ago - used to ride a full on TT rig in a pedestianised area every weekend. He claimed the safest time to train was late at night and in the early hours of the morning as the roads were quiet... Fact they were full of pissed pedestrians enjoying their weekend was lost on him.Oh and then for good measure he claimed that he was training for an attempt on the hour record! |

Well i won't be riding today - the wind is on the dangerous side of windy, plus I've broken my best road bike!
To go back to the OP, ive seen this myself where a car overtaking me properly has been 'challenged' by an oncoming vehicle. I can't comment on this particular case as i wasn't there, but in general if there are oncoming vehicles you really, really shouldn't attempt to pass a cyclist. Please wait a few seconds til your way is clear, & you won't endanger someone with an inappropriate pass. |

There were no oncoming vehicles, we were on a dual carriageway. I don't take chances like that, even educated ones. |

As i said, i wasn't there so can't comment on your case. It was a general comment about good & safe practices around vulnerable road users. |

i can imagine the situation you were in OP, if i understand what you were saying, however, if im correct, there is a chance you wouldnt have seen the car behind you in the RH lane as the angle of the exit to the island would have put it in a blind spot, so it really wouldnt have been safe for you to move over to pass the cyclist.
that said, however, as has been said, none of us were there so dont know |

Couple of things though op. Although you may have considered the other driver being at fault, he may not have seen the cyclist, and is under no legal obligation to give way to you, you really should have slowed down and passed safely when the outer lane was clear. It's down to you to be a safe stopping distance from the person in front. If you had hit the cyclist it would have been because you got too close to the cyclist whilst travelling too fast, otherwise you would have had chance to change lanes or slow down before you left it too late to pass safely. |

Sorry Topsy, but. Nobody "forced" you to overtake anything. You should always be 1) aware and 2) prepared to stop safely. That's what shoulda happened, instead you nearly killed the poor bloody cyclist!

Agreed with "Gildee" if any doubt you just need to slow down and then pass safely. I always give at least a half cars width on a rural road and as much as I can in town. I regularly set off speed indicators on my bike but I dont take stupid risks.
Also please be aware that side winds can reallu chuck a cyclist about so always give a wide berth. Thanks |

Highway code states treat like a car. If you think half a cars width is generous when the reality is it is little more than adequate I fear how little space "as much as I can" actually is? |
