Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I am thinking of having a couple of days away in March. Instead of my usual March escape to Lyme I thought I might go to Portmeirion.
Is it worth me going? Should I stay there or just visit and go somewhere else?

"It's very pretty and there's a lovely hotel next to the beach but there's not much else to do there....it's ok for an overnight stay but probably not for a few days!
Mrs Dirty "
Thanks. I was worried there wouldn't be anything to do. Pretty with nothing to do is ofyten better with someone to do, which isn't on the cards.
Then again being on my own and silent might be good for me.

The hotel is lovely. And that part of Wales is beautiful and historic.
It might be a little bleak in March though.
It's not far from where the Wales camping trip is being held if you fancy roughing it in summer. |

I don't camp. Ever. I was once described as the person who found sleeping on a bed without a mattress protector to be roughing it. |

Its a beautiful place. There's two hotels there but there are also small rooms and guest houses, you can rent out, of the top of my head about six, one with an outdoor pool
A few days there would be blissful, in my opinion.
If you drive, you are not far from lots and lots of lovely places, to go visit. |

We were there last March, day visit only we stayed on the North Coast. Most of the area was pretty quiet... then it snowed and power went out in whole town so we couldn't even get morning coffee... the mental scars will last my next 3 lives at least.
Honest opinion is it is best after May, flowers make a huge difference to Port Merion. if you are driving then see about a base further south Cardigan Bay is an easy and actually extremely beautiful drive away, and if you get caught in Snow then there are routes that don't involve driving up Snowden |

If you stay at the hotel im sure acouple of days would be fine. If you just visit an afternoon is more than enough. The tea rooms etc are just ok. Think the place does need the sun and warm weather. Enjoy. Xx |

Both the hotels and the village rooms are gorgeous. I (Anne) stayed there for a wedding but it was a hot summer and that made it. I'm a wuss and wouldn't fancy it in the winter unless I was snuggled up in the hotel. |

Do you like steam trains ?
There are big ones and little ones in Porthmadog
Crabbing off the harbour wall too if you're that way inclined
Honestly .... it's better in the summer, but still a lovely retreat |

I absolutely agree, beautiful inspiring place, have stayed many times but not so much recently ... lovely gardens and scenery, May is definitely a good time to stay ... best to stay out of season as obviously gets invaded by the public during the day, but lovely to walk around and explore when every one has gone home ... north wales is breath taking ... enjoy !!! |

You can stroll around the mock Italian village, pop over to Portmadoc, get the narrow railway to Blaenau Ffestiniog, have a lunch come back or visit the slate quarry underground.
Or the other little train to Caernarfon, visit the castle. You can see the naturist beach from portmeirion to the right of Harlech castle, too cold unless you like spotting blue tits or shrunkdick both rear this time of the year. I'm a little to far to add me to the things to do
Much more to do, even the adult club in penmaenmawr...

You'll luv it Lickety. It will be prettier later on in the year maybe but it's still worth a visit and plenty of other lovely places for you to visit while you're there. If you're there on a weekend I'll happily come and meet you for a coffee. |

It is a fabulous place, where the gardens come into their own in spring and summer. Spring has loads of rhododendrons and azaleas, many of which are huge and highly fragrant. Id love to stay in one of the buildings there, possibly the hotel. There are some fabulous guest houses, overlooking the sea etc, that are great, and just a few miles away. Depends how much peace and rest you need really. Id probably go for a b and b, where you have pubs etc nearby, but dont miss the actual place, as it is very special and unique. |

There is a lot to do if you have a car.
The Village is a folly and should be seen as such and the beach is pretty treacherous behind it... sinky sandwise.
March would be ideal as it won't be too busy but wrap up it's Wales.
Let me know what week you are going. |

Titz Towers, North Notts |
Try Caernarvon - the castle is spectacular and if you go by car, Mount Snowdon is only a hop skip and jump away
And there is a lighthouse in Anglesey that is worth seeing unless you suffer from vertigo.

Thanks for all the comments. I have looked at the prices to stay in the village now so I will have to cogitate that.
I have the same mental health week every year. I usually go away for 8th so that I am not around for 9th but I am trying to change my patterns this year. It will be sometime that week.
Cold sea and somewhere cosy appeal. |
