So me friend said she was cutting me off to go watch a 2 and a half men, for me as a person who doesn't really watch much tv , but I do know enough about it. But when will these American sitcoms stop being made and does anyone actually find them funny?? I just dont get them, I find the comedy lame, the humour non existant, they're always a bit slap stick, - but maybe they have improved can't say I have any desire to find out but from what I know from being in a relationship and made to watch these ........ 'Programs' I don't get why on earth do people bother?
To name few (and this is just a pop quiz for myself really)
Will and Grace
Big bang theory
2 and a half men
Fraiser -used to watch it some were good!
Friends
Everybody loves Raymond
2 broke girls
How I met your mother
Malcom in the middle
Ugly betty -Fuck sake made to watch that piece of crap
Minds a blank at this time of night but I know there's 40+ more
Fyi fresh Prince was awesome!

Friends - yes but only watch repeats occasionally
Everybody loves Raymond - no
2 broke girls - the odd one but I don't like the formula
How I met your mother - yes and can't wait to see the denouement
Malcom in the middle - lved this
Ugly betty -Fuck sake made to watch that piece of crap - I enjoyed it
Minds a blank at this time of night but I know there's 40+ more
Fyi fresh Prince was awesome!
"
To the above I'd add Modern Families.

When will these American sitcoms stop being made? Well the answer to that is obvious, when millions of people realise they should have been paying attention to one person who barely even watches TV and completely change their _iews on what they think is funny. |

What a stupid answer, yet again proof some people never grow up! Obviously one of the band wagon posters who cannot fathom having their own opinion on anything and will only ever agree or form an opinion based in what every other person on fab agrees on, I dint find em funny so what? Don't cone on a thread just trashing the op just for the helm if it, that's just bullying, darn right unessecary, and to be fair to your fine self probably the way the thread will go...... Let's get the band wagon started..... Anyone else wanna trash my opinion?? I dint mind it's the way of the fab forums...... |

Someone disagreeing with you is not bullying. They were not trashing your opinion, simply making a point. You were much more offensive in your response.
No doubt I am childish too and this is a stupid response. Fine by me. |

I thought you thought everyone on fab agreed with everyone else...well i don't agree with you, grow up and deal with it, after all you asked for people's opinions. Or did you mean only opinions that agreed with yours? |

I loved "Soap", but I was only 12 at the time so I can't say if I would have loved it so much as an adult, but maybe I would have enjoyed it more as there would have been adult elements I didn't understand. |

Soap was excellent. I also liked the spin off Benson. He was the butler in soap. Benson Dubois was his name. Christ knows how I've remembered that after all these years.

To the OP. Comedy is like everything else, it is subjective. That is, what you don't like may well appeal to others and vice versa.
US sitcoms have always been written using teams of writers, whereas UK sitcoms have traditionally been written by one or two scriptwriters. Yes, some modern US series do seem lacklustre but times change and so too do TV channels to meet demands. Plus, the US styles of humour can differ greatly from us over here! Of course, if you don't like an American programme, you can always switch it off; nobody is forcing you to watch it!
As for the response you got, you have to consider any replies as subjective too. Opinions from different people vary; you have to recognise and accept that! If you can't, it is quite simple ..... don't post |

Nanu nanu!
That takes me back
Big Bang Theory is the new Friends, neither of which I was into, although Friends seemed to have more warmth.
If I see one more piece of promo material in HMV with Sheldon on the front then I will scream. Im sure the actor is a very nice guy (friends with Rhianna aparantly) but this mass marketing of TBBT is all consuming. Gerk chic gone mad for the sake of profit. |

absolutely loved friends and now huge fan of big bang, many i just don't get or find funny though, as someone else said comedy is very subjective we all find differing things funny, i struggle with quite a few British comedies i just do not get what is funny at all, take Miranda for example, i have tried with it but it didn't even raise a smile never mind a laugh yet others think it hilarious |

Soap
Benson

I like Friends and Cheers was quite good also. I think american humour has improved over the years, they dont seem to preach morals so much these days, the corny lines at the end of the early shows used to make me want to chuck up lol.
Also really pleased they dont tend to go overboard with applause and whistles just because an actor walks on stage, maybe that was a real achievment for americans in those days....actually being able to walk on stage |

And very funny."
Yes. About the guy who spent his childhood glued to a TV screen watching old movies, then mentally relived every situation of his adult life as an old movie clip.
A bit Walter Mitty ish as I remember.

There are some great ones that don't seem to have been mentioned unless I didn't notice them being posted...The mighty 'Seinfeld' and 'Arrested Development' spring to mind
The Louis c.k. one is quite interestingly done but can be patchy
They differ from the British ones in loads of ways...tend to have up to 25 episodes a series as opposed to [usually] 6 or so in Britain. Allows for greater threads in story lines and development of characters. Tend to be written by larger teams because of this. Sometimes that works but not always.
Hope everyone is enjoying the site and is keeping well

I generally cant stand US Sitcoms. I think theyre written for children, and if their parents watch, great. Really stilted, predictable, mundane attempts at being funny. I do think the problem is that they are written for families in the main. Ive sat with american friends and failed to understand how they are entertained, let alone find them funny. I dont get much of British tv, as again it seems written for children and dumbed down to the extreme. Happy to have lived without tv for a while, though currently have one. |

I don't watch much TV as it is but I can't say there's been many British sitcoms I like either... The Big Bang Theory, Red Dwarf, The Inbetweeners and The IT Crowd are the only programmes I can honestly say I've ever got into and really enjoyed.

At least with American humour they dub canned laughter over it to highlight when it's supposed to be funny.
This also saves you wasting energy laughing at stuff that isn't actually funny. |

Although I wasn't too keen on the sitcom Bob Newhart, or was it Newheart? Just had to be one of the greatest American comedians ever.
His Walter Raleigh discovering tobacco, and trainee bus driver sketch's were brilliant. I know the Raleigh one is on youtube well worth a look. |

"I remember soap. I thought it was good. But memory is deceptive. I thought rowan and martin's laugh in was funny tillpython happened. I love big bang theory. Not sure where duck dynasty fits but i love that too. Sorry. I expressed my opinion which is in conflict with the op.
I loved "Soap", but I was only 12 at the time so I can't say if I would have loved it so much as an adult, but maybe I would have enjoyed it more as there would have been adult elements I didn't understand."
Confused? You will be. |

"When will these American sitcoms stop being made?
Fine by me."
I think your getting a bit paranoid, not everyone (if any) agree with your sweeping statement, so you go on the attack, just read the reply' sand take a chill pill |

American sitcoms, American TV has been outdoing British television for decades.
The BBC etc has tried and failed miserably in any proper critics eye.
Sorry, but harking back to the golden age of the British sitcom is just stupid |

"I can't believe no one has mentioned the Phil Silver's Show as being a top American comedy. hows about Taxi!!!!!"
Tuesday night, half 7 ITV and I used to yawn watching it. Still, my dad watched it.
There has been some good stuff on BBC1 - Outnumbered, Mrs Brown's Boys, Miranda to name a few. I'm not a huge fan of one of those, but it is well written and structured, I just don't find the casting that good, which sort of defeats the point. The BBC comedy budget seems to be going into panel shows and live comedy. However, going back to American comedies,
What was best? Addams Family or The Munsters? |

Seinfeld was good.
Frasier was good.
Cheers was good.
Larry Sanders was good.
If we can count Curb your Enthusiasm as a sitcom, that was good.
King of Queens was good.
The rest are kind of lame, but us Brits have a different sense of humour to many in the world. |
