Just worked out my bmr (basic metabolic rate) online and to maintain my current weight, which of course I don't, I have yo consume 2660 odd calories a day.

Even for a heffer like me that's a lot of cake!!!

Up until a few weeks ago I was using myfitnesspal to track calories and carbs etc and I was regularly way under this figure yet my weight remained the same.

So is it all bollocks??

Oh and before some smart arse says it 'eat less, move more' I know already. I do exercise, more than a lot of people I know so if you say that on this thread you are a doody head

It's all bollocks. At 5' 4" and 11 stone I'm classed as overweight. I asked the doctor if she wanted me to strip so she could point out the fat on me. She declined.

"Muscle weighs heavier than fat

Muscle is denser than fat is what it should say. For a given volume the muscle will be heavier than the fat.

Evie, basically no, there isn't a formula that will work for everyone. Not BMI, or BMR (which is Basal Metabolic Rate) or max heart rate, or any of the others.

You need to work out what works for you as you go.

The eat less, exercise more isn't strictly true though.

My personal trainer bollocks me more for skipping meals then he does if I eat an extra snack. Granted that's an allowed snack, he gets really pissy if I eat a Mars Bar as my snack.

You might not be eating enough, odd as it sounds. You do a lot of exercise. If you aren't taking in enough calories in a day to support that, your body holds onto what you do feed it and you won't lose weight.

Athletes eat 6 to 7 small meals a day and of course they exercise. I think there is truth in what SteelHeels said. I can see how if you deprive your body of food it will want to save what its got not knowing where the next meal wiLl come from.

I find the BMR very accurate. Are you choosing the correct activity level using the Harris Benedict Equation?

"I find the BMR very accurate. Are you choosing the correct activity level using the Harris Benedict Equation?"

Is it me reading this correctly, or does this Harris Benedict Equation simply resolve to :

To lose weight, burn more calories than you consume. ie eat less exercise more. Nothing more nothing less, occasionally derided on here.

Of course, the quality of the calories consumed, their nutritional values and timing of consumption all play a part.

I would also suggest a variety of calorie burning effort/exercise works better than a single means.

"Muscle weighs heavier than fat

No it doesn't a kilo of fat and a kilo of muscle weigh the same...e.g a kilo!

Muscle is denser the fat, so kilo of muscle would be much smaller in size then a kilo if fat, but they weigh the same.

The Harris Benedict Equation is the part of the BMI where you work out your activity level multiply the BMR rating by it.

It's all simple maths and yes taking in fewer calories than you use up is the key to losing weight.

It depends on how much food you stuff in your mouth and your reason for staying in bed all day.

"Muscle weighs heavier than fat

a lb of Fat weighs the same as a lb of muscle obviously but the weight to volume ratio is greater for fat than it is for muscle as muscle is denser. Or that's what I understand it to be
