At what age should you STOP driving

Thats the thing isn't it?
When you do not feel confident any more.
That will be a different age for everyone.
My Mother in law is 90 this year and still driving. But she is also still climbing mountains and doing five mile walks in the hills lol.

think it should be down to some kind of testing..
i know of some mid 60yr olds id not feel too safe in a car with, and my granddad is 73 is switched on and perfectly safe, great eye sight |

I am 54 and my health at the moment is not good. so I have stopped driving for now.
There is not legal reason why I couldn't drive. but I do not feel 100% confident in my reactions at the mo. If my health does not improve then I will give up my licence.

Some of them.are just plain unsafe full stop. Its a shame and everybodys different. My.dads 75 and hes really becoming slower and less confident.with every year......not sure he'd give up his independence readily.... |

That's impressive 
And this is why it could never be a mandatory figure. There are people in their 60's with failing eyesight and/or dementia, people 25 years older who are physically and mentally sharp.

Dont give up your licence just stop driving and maybe things may improve....good luck |

I couldn't say a particular age, as some people older than others are perfectly good drivers... I would suggest people having difficultys or not as good as they used to be should re-take their test including eye tests etc. |

We have unemployment problems, but many more people would benefit from regular driving re-tests. This would help employment levels and help to improve road safety levels. Automatic re-test after 100 years driving too. Drivers must be able to drive at the speed of all road types and male good progress - this is something that many of all ages fail at. Insurance levels could also fall based on having frequent high driving test scores, rather than just pass or fail. Advanced driver levels already have something similar. Age is just a number and only an indicator that some abilities on average may no longer be so good, based on probabilities. Regular tests and health checks as fit to drive would help. |

Pretty sure that once you get to 70 you have to have 3 yearly licence that is verified by your Dr each time?? ( will stand corrected if not the case?) I know of 76 year olds who are very fit and totaly able to drive well still... Yet some that age loose confidence etc. and choose not to. A very individual thing and don't think its fair if " computor says no" and a cut off age given to all.  |

My Mum jacked it in while in her 60s as she didn't feel up to it any more but my Dad still drives ok at 74.
One of the Police Action programmes that Jeremy Theakston narrates was from Eastbourne/Bournmouth and a specialist police unit was set up to deal with the high incients of geriatric crashes. They were doing eyesight tests etc and it was quite moving seeing some of the old un's realise their time at the wheel was at an end and a big loss to their independance. |

Why 82 ? I'd be pretty pissed off if I got ran over full stop. A 17 yr old who has just passed his test is just as likely to cause an accident as anyone else |

would be much more worried about a young inexperienced boy racer thinking he's Stirling Moss! |
