Cant believe how difficult it is to get someone around to get quotes for a full boiler replacement.
Anyone else have problems getting reliable tradesmen during this time of recession?

If it's the same trouble I have with gas engineers. It's because they are so busy,
Better of trying a national company that is recognised, like british gas or regal
More expensive, but at least you know they will turn up |

Tell us about it !!! Although mysteriously they're always complaining about not enough work and the Poles/immigrants/whatever taking it all.
Last year we wanted a quote for some paving work. Bit of googling - phoned around, made 5 appointments.
1 never showed at all
1 called to cancel and said he'd call to rearrange - never heard back
1 made an appointment, confirmed. Never showed
2 turned up of which only one actually came back with a quote. The other said they'd post it to us, and we're still waiting.
Incidentally these stats are almost identical to 12 years ago, when we moved in an needed some work doing. It was supposed to be a recession then too.
Currently we need some roofing done. We found a firm last year that did £1,200 work for us (we paid cash). After the recent storms we need some more work doing. We called the guy, he's said he'll come early this week ... we have a feeling he won't show.... |

I work in the building trade and go out to do a lot of free quotes. Costs me my time, and money in petrol, travelling, etc. Most of them turn out to be timewasters or try it on and try to knock your price down saying they can get it done cheaper. I just say go ahead and let the other guy do it cheaper then, lol.
You tend to get what you pay for though, (as with all things), and i've lost count how many jobs i've had to put right because someone went for the cheapest quote, and they turned out to be cowboys and made a pigs ear of it. |

But, I wouldn't just give a job to a tradesperson I don't know and without a quote. You don't know they are cowboys until they start the job unless you know someone who has a reliable person what else can you do?
On the other side, I am self employed and spend my time and money to bring in work because it doesn't just walk through the door.

I am also self employed and most of my work comes from word of mouth or recommendations. I'm just saying it does'nt always work out best if you go for the cheapest quote, as when you pay peanuts you usually end up with monkeys, lol. It's upto the individual who is paying at the end of the day to make their own mind up. |

Somewhere in North Norfolk |
Apparently good plasterers are the most difficult to find at the moment.
So if anyone is out of work and looking to retrain in something new, learn to plaster to a good standard and you'll be sorted. |

I've always been lucky in getting trades in to do work for me. Like someone else said, the good ones are worth waiting for.
Plus my plumber is bloody gorgeous , so win win ! |

I adore Tradesmen.
My hubby is one.
I am lucky I can get my hands on them any time I like (literally as I own the company)
But seriously if your stuck try your local councils Trading Standards Recommended Trader Register, they have a list of their highly recommended, skilled tradespeople who wont want to let you down or rip you off as this recommendation is invaluable to us in the trade. |

When I was having my house done British Gas quoted me £300 for a pump for a boiler. A plumber I got in got hold of one for less than £100. I was lucky. My ex had his own construction company and put me in touch with all the tradesmen I needed. The only one who let me down was an electrician. |

It's always worth paying more . I personally charge more if I quote for a job . They don't get me to do it as taking a cheaper quote and then call me to sort the other guys mistakes out.
You get what you pay for a decent vat registered company with liability insurance who has commercial contracts is worth the extra .
