Latin is the base for a lot of languages so this idea isn't as daft as it first appears to be. Our schools are seriously lacking when it comes to teaching foreign languages.

As for Gove, I don't think he is git fit the job.

Where are all these subjects going to find space in the curriculum?

Schools open 8-6, 6 days a week, 48 weeks a year?

I'm sorry I can't agree

Maybe languages are needed

I for one can speak 2 foreign languages

However maybe learning Spanish and Mandarin Chinese would be far more beneficial

But let's put thing into perspective there are far more important things we should be teaching our young people

Goves ideals are like the rest of his parties

Far removed from reality

Cnuts the lot of em

More kids with a grasp of basic English would be a good start.

I agree Gove does come up with a load if rubbish most of the time. But if Greek or Latin are taught to children from a very early age then it may be easier for them later on when learning other languages.

Actually he is right...

The state system need to become more like the public school system...

Public schools have a 6/7 to 1 student teacher ratios...

9 out of 10 top university places go to public schools...

Yes I think he is right and I am fully in favour of making state education comparable to private education...

But somehow I dont think my understanding of what makes public school education so good and his are quite the same thing...

For many years I believe we should be teaching what I call real life skills

Budgeting . Interest rates . Mortgages

Cooking ( real cooking) not flap jacks

Politics

I think history should be taught but more recent history ( not about the industrial revolution) perhaps more about the minors strikes . Stuff like that

The word 'curriculum' is Latin

That's an even bigger issue. Can we really expect kids whose homelife is conducted in the parents native/ foreign tongue to progress well in English?

He's probably opened up some new cv document or website with Latin in there, and doesn't understand it so thinks everyone should learn it

Still one should admire his optimism ( or should that be delusion) for wanting to make state schools as good as private.

Oh And my daughter will apparently be one of the guinea pigs for the new style GCSE exam.

Yes he is a nob
