Does it mean much these days? Ive used the same garage since i was 18.. bought all my cars from there and let them do the services/MOTs. Ive used the same phone network for 13yrs now. Tend to use the same supermarkets..

Wondering if i should just start looking elsewhere for better deals..

Sadly, yes

Although I've done ok in saying to companies I've been with you a while, what can you do for me.

Some companies reward loyalty but others don't.

I was with AA for over 30yrs and got pissed off that new members got a better deal than existing members.

I shop around now for everything

In the middle

I have been going to the same opticians since I was 12 and on Friday I had a call from them saying they had been bought out by a larger company and all my records will be passed onto them, seriously I was gutted and felt very emotional as did the lovely lady who manages the reception. It was like visiting family and I am truly gutted that I will now just be another faceless member of public with an appointment with a different face everytime

I used to - but now I tend more to look for deals. Am currently considering changing my gas/electric suppliers.

Same here, I have found shopping around often saves me money.

paying £55 for an MOT when i drive past places saying £25..

it sounds daft but i kinda trust the mechanics and the garage as a whole.. so the paying extra is for my peace of mind that its not gonna be a shoddy job.

Some large companies tend to have policies that shaft loyal customers.

Take Sky for instance. If you sit quietly and watch your telly, you pay the price you always have done

If you call and say "I'm leaving", they miraculously find you a killer deal from nowhere

Always keep an eye on your car and house insurance. If you don't, it creeps up, even though you aren't making any claims. When you call them to have a go, they miraculously find you a killer deal from nowhere lol

Why can't they reward your loyalty by quietly putting you on the killer deal without you having to complain?

If your mobile phone contract is up don't accept the price you are already paying. Call em and guess what..........

I call it profit by apathy, while a minority will chase a better deal, thousands (millions?) won't, leaving the big companies with huge profit margins.

Loyalty only works with small companies, the big boys only care about £££.

When I had debt on my credit card, I noticed new customers got a lower Apr.

I rang, threatened to take a loan to pay it off. They dropped the rate.

Its your money.

Which supplier did you change to? Both my daughters are on pay as you go and they are paying lots each week!

With EDF. I moved house and the landlord changed the meters to pay as you go...electric is fine I've hardly put anything on but gas I've put on £100 of gas since the 17th so they are coming out on the 12 to change to credit meters and have put me on a better tariff

If you are buying goods or commodities, then I agree that shopping around is the best way. If it is a service you are buying, like a solicitor or other professional, then I would stay with someone I trusted, even if they were a bit more expensive than the competition. Price isn't everything.

I always use the same garage because I trust them. They've helped me out loads when I've been stuck.

Currently looking for a new energy supplier. Fed up of the one I'm with, they are totally useless. I also shop around for insurance every year. Martin Lewis.

Somewhere in North Norfolk

I always shop around now but if I've been happy with the service from a company I'll usually try using someone else's lower price to negotiate with before I switch. If they can't beat it, or at least match it, however, I'm gone.

I upgraded my mobile very recently. My existing service provider, direct, wanted £160 for the 'phone I wanted. That was back in November last year. I've kept an eye on the main sites that do 'phones since, watching for a deal I'm happy with. A few days ago I found a deal for an extra £2 per month (24 month contract), with more minutes and data, with the 'phone free from one of the major stores. On checking I found I could get £25 cashback with Quidco for using that store. It was a no brainer.

I always haggle on insurance when the renewal date is coming up. I usually do online comparison searches for car insurance (and contents insurance) and then call my existing provider to see if they'll match it. They always have so far.

Last time my car insurance was due, however, I could not be arsed. What I did instead was deduct around 15% from the quoted renewal premium, pick a slightly obscure and newish company that I was fairly sure my company wouldn't be sharing data with, and call my company to say I'd had a much lower quote from the other company. My company matched it on the spot without a murmur, even beating it slightly.

I'll always play companies against each other where possible.

However, I'd been with Plusnet for a very long time for broadband and 'phone. When I moved last April they wanted to charge me £75 which the waived when I agreed to sign a new 12 month contract. However they also used it as an excuse to prematurely end some discounts I was getting.

When I had to move again in November, they tried the £75 or new contract trick again. I wasn't happy and told them I'd lost out quite enough on my last move, since they'd cancelled my discounts and this time I expected them to waive the fee. I didn't want to sign a new contract because I was moving in to a cable area and wanted to get cable broadband asap.

Plusnet would not budge and, when looking around at options, I found by taking broadband with Virgin, I'd get nearly enough cashback to cover the cost of paying off my Plusnet account, I called Virgin and asked them to cover the difference if I signed up for bb and 'phone immediately. They agreed so that was a done deal. Plusnet then sent me several letters saying how sorry they were to lose me and asking if there was anything they could have done to keep me!

I expect the same, if not better, deals as new customers from the companies I use. If I don't get them, I have no problem voting with my direct debit.

I agree with that. Since Orange/T Mobile/EE merged, or whatever they did, the signal where I live has got progressively worse.

I can't be bothered to shop around, I do all my insurance through a high street broker.

Buy all my fuel from sainsburys, all my shopping from sainsburys or m and s occasionally I do asda, but that's only because 1 mile away from me, we have a asda high street store, and I use it as a convenience shop ..

I could shop around, but have enough difficulty fitting everything into my life as it is, and to be honest I hate filling in forms over the internet
