I don't agree....

Surely by going there in defiance of the Russian stance on gay rights she is standing up for her morals and supporting gays all over the world

I think you are missing the point...

The BBC have chosen an openly gay female anchor! What a wonderfully subtle way to rub Mr Herman Yeltsin's (sorry freudian slip there meant to say hyman no heman)

nose in his homophobia. Just hope that every other TV network sends their campest male and butchest female commentators!

I agree with WillWill. The BBC is still very highly regarded in most of the world and the fact that such an establishment organization are sending an openly gay broadcaster to cover this event will be very subversive in many ways. The Mayor of Sochi will be unlikely to turn down the offer of talking to the BBC so I hope she inter_iews him. It will make a mockery of his bigotry especially if she doesn't even mention her sexuality.

She has no choice, she is contracted to do as she is told. But I'm sure there was a story saying she wouldn't go a while back, maybe the contract was mentioned.

Yes, on The Last Leg, the other night she explained that she had a change of heart & the best way to counter Russian homophobia was to actually go there in defiance of it.

Fair play to her - & she was looking good in her new slimmed look!!

I saw that too and thought she made the right choice. Good for her.

And I don't believe she's going as a commentator on the sports but rather as an anchor for the coverage. So if people can stop getting their knickers in a twist that'd be great!

dont think it has anything to do with the BBC pushing a pro gay agenda and everything to do with the fact they think she is a decent anchor and are paying her a decent wedge of cash every year.

Clare Balding... *shudders*.

There must be an attractive lesbian with a personality who knows about sport that they could get to front the games?

I think she does a great job. Setting aside the Washington Wizards v Nicks game she covered in 2001, a mistake she learned from, Clare Balding seems to do lots of research for whatever sport she covers (exceptional for the swimming during London 2012), and for me is BBC's shining light for sports presenter.

As for the Russian homophobic stance, I think it shows courage by the BBC and Clare Balding.

How do you know she isn't an avid winter sports fan? You don't have to have participated in a sport to commentate on it. How many F1 races has Jake Humphrey raced in? Was john inverdale ever a strongest man?

I also made this comment earlier about so many presenters.

Just saying, usually means you can ignore everything preceding it as it is (horse) crap.

There will probably be co-presenters with a more in depth knowledge of each individual sport.

Personally (and I'm not just saying this to wind billy up) but I prefer an anchor that has limited knowledge because it means they will ask the questions I want to ask. They often have experts with them. If they are too knowledgeable they gok all geeky on us. Its one of the reasons I don't like DJ's like Jo Wiley or Zane Lowe. They are too muso for me lol

Someone who knows a lot about bobsleigh isn't going to know a lot about speed skating. She seems to take an interest in sport in general so seems as good a person as anyone to anchor the shows.

I remember her commentating on winter sports- the last WO?- and she floundered. She was way, WAY out of her depth and it was painful to watch.

There are a couple of other winter sports commentators on telly now who actually understand that world and with the painfully limited BBC coverage, why send a high profile commentator anyway?

She's a smart professional-I'd bet she's made lot of effort to improve her knowledge this time but call me fussy- I raher like having someone commentating who walks the walk, not just talks the talk.

Why do folk get wound up about something that has so little to do with fuck all.

Baldings lesbianism, big deal. Baldings ability to present; vastly improved over the years but still prone to the odd gaffe, shes human. The difference this will make to Russian attitudes.....zero.

Fuck me get yourselves upset about something that actually matters and not some over paid lucky git on a jolly ,whos lost some weight and no doubt will be advertising for some miracle product when she gets back ( Pedigree chum most likely )

This place never ceases to amaze and amuse me!

My understanding is that Clare Balding is the anchorwoman, not one of the experts, two different roles.

Oh, and she's a female of course, and a lesbian; shock horror.

And the armchair experts' alternative suggestions? No doubt all straight guys!

Oh dear, sexism alive and well here too!!

God this makes me livid !

What has happened to people ? Narcisstic self interest has taken precedence over doing what is right ?

1968 olympiad Tommie Smith , John Carlos and Peter Norman all compete and get gold silver and bronze in the 200m. T Smith J Carlos wear black gloves and no shoes and black socks as a symbol of black poverty, give a human rights power salute when receiving medals on the podium in protest against human rights abuses. Peter norman a white guy wears a forbidden OPHR badge (olympic project for human rights) he declines the salute being a white guy but stands in solidarity.

London olympics and an on going propaganda campaign against the disabled by the govt. No protest or comment from any team gb disabled athlete.

Balding presenting the olympics is not any kind of message to the russian regime unless she actually makes some comment about the issue and STANDS UP for what is right.

I have zero respect for people who put their interests above doing the right thing.

Tommie Smith John Carlos Peter Norman all heroes in my _iew.
