Over the rainbow, under the bridge |
In my local area I have noticed a number of properties in the last 18 months suddenly sprout a caravan in their gardens. Some are about a 4 berth but one I have noticed is about a 6 or 8 berth.
These caravans, however, are not being used for holidaying. At least two I know for certain are being used to house additional family members. All of them appear to be used to actually live in.
I was thinking that, in this time of recession where more and more people are finding it difficult to afford to rent even the smallest flat, that this seems to be a cost effective way for families to help each other, in the interim at least.
Has anyone else noticed this? |

To get round planning, make sure they are touring caravans, and don't take the wheels off. also be discreet, make sure they are well screened from neighbours or the road. |

"I have 2 caravans , and rent them out, usually to workmen, needing a bed from mon to Friday, suits us, "
I am aware that that happens but that is generally a temporary thing. In these cases it appears that people are living in them all week long and for sustained periods of time - up to 18 months in one case. |

It's perfectly legal and acceptable to use a touring caravan as a spare room. Statics however will have the council planning committee on the doorstep. |

I wasn't suggesting that it was illegal. I was simply making an observation. It seems to be a pragmatic way in which to help family and friends who may be struggling to find somewhere affordable to live. They can have their own private space and also access to home comforts.
It beats a b and b. |

It also beats sleeping on the couch which some are having to do due to lack of available, reasonably priced properties. Whole families are living in spaces not designed as bedrooms. |

Been there, done that. A caravan would have solved my immediate problems. |

I once spent 6 months in a caravan when my mum remarried following my dad popping his clogs and we were awaiting an extension being built. I learnt to dash the 15 yards into the house to have a wash very quickly when I was on an early shift. ![](/icons/s/2/cute.gif) |

I saw a program about that, all I could think of was how much condensation there would be |

There has been a converted shipping container 'development' for at least 5 years in Docklands in London.
The rise of canal boats is the thing I have noticed. |

If you rent to illegals they're hardly going to head to environmental health. |
